IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM THE LAB (NEOGEN CANADA)

Some CSA members have been using outdated DNA application forms with the incorrect mailing address printed on them. Up until the end of last month (May 31, 2021) those packages were being forwarded from the downtown location to Neogen Canada’s new address location on your behalf.

Cut-off Date: As of June 1st, DNA sample packages that are sent to the old mailing address will be returned to sender. To avoid delays in receiving your lab results, please make sure that you are sending your hair cards and corresponding DNA application forms to Neogen Canada’s current address. Prior to placing your package in the mail, review the top right-hand corner of the DNA Application Form and ensure the address of the lab is indicated as follows:

Neogen Canada
7323 Roper Road NW
Edmonton, AB  T6E 0W4

BREED IMPROVEMENT

PERFORMANCE

Docility EPD
Members are encouraged to look at their docility EPD available on their animals on the online system. Docility EPD express the probability that progeny are likely to be a docility score 1 or 2 (Very quiet, quiet) versus being wilder or more flightly. A higher docility EPD value indicates quieter cattle. Docility EPD are calculated using scores within a contemporary group as reported by breeders. CSA docility EPD are largely based on the over 45,638 docility scores reported by members.

Yield Grade EPD
Yield Grade EPD are also now available on the member online system. The Yield Grade EPD indicates animals whose offspring are more likely to score a Yield Grade 1 or 2 versus a 4 or 5. Thus a smaller YG EPD indicates a higher yield carcass yield or lower yield grade score.

Heifer Pregnancy Data
Over the summer as we are breeding potential replacement heifers it is important to remember to record all exposure data on heifers so that we can report it on our enrolment forms this fall. Heifers that are exposed and do not conceive are not required to be enrolled, but the data surrounding which heifers were exposed, resulting in a pregnancy is very important to help identify the first step in female genetics, having a heifer be bred successfully so she can enter the cow herd. Breeders are encouraged to enter this information on their fall enrolment forms for all exposed females.
