Screening Assessments in Georgia's Schools
|
|
SB 48 requires local school systems to begin screening all kindergarten students and certain students in grades 1-3 for characteristics of dyslexia beginning in 2024-25. To prepare, the bill requires
GaDOE to conduct a 3-year Dyslexia Pilot Program (2020-2023).
As such, school leadership teams are in the process of considering universal screeners to identify children at risk for struggling with reading acquisition. Early identification and intervention can mean prevention of reading failure.
The goal is not to refer “at risk” children to special education but to more effectively address their specific deficits earlier in the general education setting thereby improving overall outcomes (Badian, 2000)
On April 26, 2021, IDA-GA Board Member Jennifer Lindstrom, Ph.D., presented for the GaDOE on what school districts need to consider when selecting screening tools. Watch the presentation and view the slides here.
