A Message From Chief Fletcher

Dear Friends, We have had much to celebrate this month, from San Francisco's reopening, appreciating fathers, celebrating the LGBTQ+ community, and elevating Black history by formally observing June 19th as a national holiday. Following President Biden's declaration of Juneteenth as a federal holiday, Mayor Breed declared Juneteenth to be a legal holiday for all City employees. Juneteenth National Independence Day, long celebrated in the African American community, commemorates the day on which enslaved African Americans in Texas learned of their freedom from bondage. As communities across our country continue to wrestle with the reality and legacy of institutional racism, we must continue to commit ourselves to the ongoing pursuit of equality and the hard work that must be done to eradicate racism, and remove all racial and ethnic disparities in our country. Celebrating PRIDE!

Pride Month commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, the tipping point of the Gay Rights Movement in the United States. Every year, PRIDE is celebrated all around the world to honor the LGBTQ+ community and their allies, uniting to pay tribute to the social movement, diversity, and ability to live a life of dignity. It's no secret that PRIDE runs deep in San Francisco and this extends to us here at SFAPD. We are proud allies to the LGBTQ+ community and every year support the City's efforts to have a safe and fun celebration. Happy Pride 2021!

Celebrating Success - Never Looking Back

Jabari Jackson After being released from jail in 2018, Jabari completed a residential drug treatment program. To stay connected to the community, he became a member of the Mentoring Men's Movement (M3) and Positive Directions Equals Change. In 2020, he was unanimously selected by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors as a representative to San Francisco’s Reentry Council. Earlier this year, Jabari was the first client selected for SFAPD’s Wall of Change - a significant accomplishment memorializing the changes he has made in his life. Jabari recently earned his Community Health Worker and Case Management certificate from City College and is now developing a career helping others struggling with addiction and reentry.

Positive Directions Equals Change Positive Directions Equals Change has been serving San Franciscans struggling with addiction for 27 years. Started in 1993, Positive Directions began as a support network for African Americans in recovery, many of whom were completing drug treatment programs and wanted to establish an ongoing support network of friends and associates. After years of supporting various treatment facilities, rehabilitation centers, and jails, Positive Directions expanded its services and now offers Community Support Groups and Classes.
