A Message From Your POA President
| |
Mountain Glen Neighbors,
I just want to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back to Mountain Glen as we look forward to another beautiful summer in the mountains.
This year the POA board is very optimistic that we can all enjoy a full schedule of Monday night twilight dinners, potluck dinner/dances, cookouts, and golf this summer after two years of total or partial closure due to Covid-19.
To encourage social members to enjoy as many events as possible, the cost of outside catered dinners will stay at just $15 per head and $5 for potlucks and cookouts.
To keep our price per person the same while catering prices have risen, we can no longer cover the costs of no-shows. If you sign up for a catered dinner and do not attend, we will need to charge you for the event. Also, please keep in mind that while guests are always welcome, after attending two events they will need to purchase a social membership to attend any future social events. Social memberships at Mountain Glen are extremely reasonably priced at just $50 per person.
Look for more cookouts this summer and a wider range of caterers. If event attendance is as good as we expect it to be this summer, we are hoping to extend some events into the first half of September.
Life is short so I hope you'll take the time to stop and enjoy each season we have in these beautiful mountains!
Tim Mathis
POA President
P.S. We will continue to send out updates on the road resurfacing as it progresses. We know this is going to be very inconvenient at times for everyone and greatly appreciate your patience as the project progresses.

For the last 22 years, we have been fortunate enough to enjoy ADC office manager, Vicki Daniels', friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient help in many areas. This year marks her transition from full-time to working two days a week as she looks forward to retirement at the end of of the year. She plans to enjoy her free time by painting more, gardening, babysitting, and welcoming her first great-grandchild in August.
Taking over the reigns in the ADC office is Devan Helton, who began training in January. As most of you know, Devan is Vicki’s daughter. Devan started working at the Mountain Glen snack bar 17 years ago. The very capable Holly Isaacs has taken over Devan’s previous position as manager of the snack bar.
You'll find Devan’s daughter, Lexi, working in the snack bar part-time while she attends cosmetology school. Devan’s son, Ethan, also worked for Mountain Glen in the past. (He now works for Titan Towers and loves it.) The most exciting news of all? Ethan and his wife, Erin, will introduce Ava Grace, Devan’s first grandchild and Vicki’s first great-grandchild, to the world in August.
ADC office hours will remain unchanged.

Resurfacing of the bridge near the 9th hole tee box is another welcome improvement
Good news for pickleball players! The pickleball courts have been power washed, lines have been repainted, and we now have new nets. Many thanks to Bill Seller's efforts behind the scenes to make this happen, along with other residents who donated to this effort.

The best reason to play bridge is that it’s fun! It’s a unique type of mental workout that is both relaxing and invigorating. However, if you are looking for more reasons to play, remember that bridge is more than just an enjoyable pastime. It provides demonstrable benefits for mental fitness and brain health by using both sides of your brain. Every time you play, you use your skills in communication, logic, memory, visualization, and psychology. Scientific studies have shown that playing bridge lowers your chance of developing Alzheimer disease by as much as 75%.
So whether you are a beginner or an experienced player, sign up and join us on Wednesday mornings at the Clubhouse starting June 15th!

Your Mountain Glen neighbors, Nathan and Suzzannah Gittner, are busy breathing new life into what is now called "The Inn at Shady Lawn" in downtown Newland.
The Inn is being completely transformed. Rooms are being redecorated, with each one having it's own individual decor. The photo of the lobby, above, gives you an idea of The Inn's new look. In addition to cable TV, The Inn now has 5G broadband. Renovations are ongoing with central air conditioning being installed this summer, and plans for repainting and wood floors throughout further down the road. Outside all new landscaping is almost in place; all the outside doors are being painted a deep red, and the main signage in being replaced. In back there is a outdoor area that is being spruced up with new seating, a fire pit and twinkle lights. Prices remain very reasonable.
Although The Inn at Shady Lawn is now open, the Grand Re-Opening event is scheduled for June 25th. Extensive kitchen renovations have also been made and there are plans for a restaurant and boutique to open on June 25th as well.
Next time you're out running errands, stop by and say hello to Nathan and Suzzannah at The Inn at Shady Lawn!

Mountain Glen's 3rd annual Holiday Potluck was organized and co-hosted by Gail & Jon Patterson and Carrie & Rafael Salinas, with Melinda Cumming helping set up. Sixty-five people attended this festive event on December 13, 2021 in spite of on-going Covid-19 concerns.
Happily, the party did not turn out to be a super-spreader event unless you are talking about the holiday spirit and good cheer that abounded!
