La ‘Donna struggled to find living-wage work or a career in which she could advance. She completed Charlotte Area Fund’s work readiness program in December, which helped prepare her for the workplace. Since enrolling in Southeastern Community Action Partnership’s (SCAP) Family Empowerment Self-Sufficiency (FESS) program in 2020, Ms. Jestine Davis, a Hoke County mother of one, has been active. She has attended financial workshops, completed ACT Work Keys National Career Readiness, and utilized the program’s education support to complete a notary course at Richmond Community College. SCAP teams with Church and Family Services team on produce delivery
Southeastern Community Partnership (SCAP) partnered with Church and Community Services to deliver 200 fruit and vegetable boxes to seniors over the age of 55. Kathleen Lowe Jacobs, SCAP's director of Community Service Block Grant, said that the agency wanted to do a service to assist seniors because that group often gets overlooked.“So, we used some of these funds to assist those elderly folks with some non-perishable food and fresh fruits and vegetables." Mountain Projects receives $30,000 Nantahala Health Foundation grant
Mountain Projects has received a $30,000 investment grant from Nantahala Health Foundation to increase home safety for underserved populations in Jackson County. The funds will be used for Housing Rehabilitation projects in Jackson County. “We have a long waiting list for these services, and it will feel good to give these people some relief,” said Mountain Projects Rehabilitation and Weatherization Program Manager, Vivian Bumgarner. WAMY's Denim & Diamonds event helps fight local poverty
Jewels and sequins were sparkling amongst the casually clad at WAMY Community Action’s inaugural “Denim and Diamonds” event, raising funds to help fight poverty in the High Country. Approximately 250 people were in attendance for the ticketed dinner and live auction. READ MORE

CCA Walkthrough shelter provides youth stability
The Walkthrough, Coastal Community Action's six-bed HOPE youth shelter, provides a respite for youth aged 12 to 17 who are homeless, housing unstable, or at risk in their current housing. “Guests begin working on an exit plan shortly after arriving," said CCAP’s Housing and Community Services Director Greg Claycamp. "The goal is for guests to exit to safe, stable housing." READ MORE

I-CARE receives grant for workforce development
I-CARE is the recipient of a $12,143 grant from the Iredell County Community Foundation (ICCF). The agency will use the funds to provide workforce development opportunities in high-demand careers. “I believe we have distributed grants to our most diverse group of recipients in Foundation history," said Costi Kutteh, chair of ICCF’s Board of Advisors. State launches new webpage for ease in finding state grants |
Through a partnership between the N.C. Office of Strategic Partnerships and the N.C. Department of Information Technology, the state of North Carolina added a new grants page to its website. The grants page links to various grant programs across state agencies. The page is searchable by keyword and can also be exported into a spreadsheet that you can download. The Grants Page is designed to make it easier for nonprofits seeking state grants to identify possible grants without having to look through dozens of state agency websites.

Q&A with Debra Farrington, NCDHHS' Chief Health Equity Officer
Debra Farrington has stepped into a new role at NCDHHS, becoming its Chief Health Equity Officer. She previously served as chief of staff for NC Medicaid, where she received the 2022 John R. Larkins Award for her commitment to workplace and community justice and equality. In an NCDHHS newsletter article, she shares more about her background and some of the insights she’s gained from working in public health and observing the challenges of receiving health care. to receive funds from two benefit concerts

Band Together and United Way of the Greater Triangle have teamed up for two benefit concerts this fall to raise money for Triangle nonprofits that focus on housing accessibility. The two concerts will help raise money for eight Triangle nonprofits: CASA, Community Empowerment Fund, EMPOWERment Inc., Families Together, Habitat for Humanity of Durham, Habitat for Humanity of Wake County, Hope Renovations, and Passage Home.
