Pastoral Reflection
Evergreen has been working our way through the On Being broadcast with Krista Tippett for our Wednesday night discussions. We recently listened to the interview with Oliver Burkeman, a journalist and author with a British Quaker-Jewish background.
His book 4,000 Weeks: Time Management for Mortals turns the time management movement on its head. Rather than organizing our time in a way that fits all of our tasks into our schedule and "clears the deck" (which will never happen), he suggests prioritizing what's important and being willing to be bad at some things or sacrifice them all together to find the most meaning in life. We have maybe four thousand weeks in our lifespan. What are we going to do with the time?
One of his chapters is dedicated to friendships, what we might call fellowship. He points out that quality meaning in life isn't derived from isolating ourselves and having complete autonomy over our time. The best sense of meaning is found in doing things with other people. We may have to make some compromises around preferences in order to be with those other people, but there's something that happens in a relationship or group dynamic that creates the meaning we crave.
As we reflect on Pentecost, the early Jerusalem Church, and the fellowship those involved shared, may we prioritize our relationships in a way that adds meaning to our lives. May it also be a witness to those around us.
Amen
