Remarks From Our Outgoing Interim Executive Director:
"It has truly been an honor and a pleasure to work with you."
|
|
Last June, former Executive Director Andy Gaines reached out to me to explore whether I might help out at Ashby Village for a few months while he took a much-needed leave to attend to his family. Later that summer Andy decided to leave his position here in order to continue staying home during his wife’s worsening health crisis, and I became Interim Executive Director at Ashby Village. A search process commenced, it took awhile to find the right person, and now here I am, finally leaving after a full year.
A very full year indeed! We have said goodbye to people who have been central to the village during the past decade. We have welcomed extremely talented new staff, as well as new Villagers of all types. We have weathered another year of the pandemic, experiencing waves of hope and disappointment as surges came and went. We have produced brilliant cultural and educational programs that have far extended our reach and impact. We have deepened our awareness and strengthened our commitment to bringing more diversity, equity and inclusion to the village. Through it all, we have sustained a steady and impressive amount of day-to-day services, fulfilling our mission to help people live in our community with more support and less isolation.
I feel so fortunate to have been a part of it all, working together with so many of you to keep the village moving forward. I’ve been struck from the outset by the keen intelligence, passionate dedication, and overall quality of caring that you have shown to me and to each other. You’ve been generous, candid, patient, appreciative, responsive and helpful. It has truly been an honor and a pleasure to work with you.
I look forward to welcoming Bab Freiberg as Ashby Village’s new Executive Director on June 20th and to doing whatever I can to support her transition into this big new role. I have tremendous faith in her and in all of you. I will stay connected and will be excited to hear how Ashby Village continues to grow and thrive.
Many many thanks to all of you.
Ashby Village Interim Executive Director

“She is so competent at what she does, and was especially helpful to us at the beginning when all of our bookkeeping and accounting was done by volunteers,” said Ashby Village Board Chair, Andra Lichtenstein ... "We were so lucky."

Of Interest
Dr Louise Aronson’s wonderful and enlightening presentation on Ageism at our last Healthier Aging/Arts & Culture event on March 27th has sparked much discussion around the Village about the subject of ageism and how it affects the health and wellbeing of older Americans.
In the next few months, our Healthier Aging Team will work to facilitate these discussions, as well as possible projects we may want to initiate to help reduce the deleterious effects of ageism in our lives.
For those of you who have not yet read Dr. Aronson’s book, Elderhood: Transforming Medicine, Reimagining Life, it is a wonderful and highly readable summary of the issues and possible solutions to ageism. For those who missed her talk, it is available at the Ashby Village YouTube channel here.

This article from the New York Times is a must read. It explores three decades of research by Yale Psychologist Becca Levy on how age discrimination can take years off one’s life.
New research shows that women may not realize their symptoms point to heart trouble and medical providers aren’t picking up on it either.

Resources on Technology Topics

Edited by Member Peter Sussman

A native of the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas, poet Wendy Trevino now lives in an apartment in San Francisco, where she makes her living as a grant writer. Today's featured poem is from her first book-length poetry collection, Cruel Fiction, which was published by Oakland's Commune Editions ("purveyor of poetry & other antagonisms") in 2018 and is available both in conventional book form and in a free download version. Trevino has been called a revolutionary poet and an experimental writer, but, for whatever it's worth, her biography on her publisher's website states explicitly, "Wendy is not an experimental writer." However one characterizes her, today's poetry selection, " Brazilian Is Not A Race #16," is as relevant as this evening's televised newscast.
