Gardening and Your Well-Being

Gardening is a great way to get outside and in touch with nature, but it also has health benefits, including exposure to vitamin D, decreased dementia risk, mood-boosting benefits by lowering levels of the stress hormone (cortisol), working new muscles in your body, and combating loneliness. Gardens are catalysts that allow individuals to engage with their community while beautifying and benefiting it by introducing fresh herbs and vegetables.

Did you know you can enjoy these benefits of gardening right here on our campus? The UC Berkeley Staff Garden was started in 2019 by Be Well at Work to promote health and well-being. The garden includes herbs, vegetables, native Californian plants, as well as plants used by the Ohlone. Some of the herbs we grow are rosemary and basil, which are featured in some Cook Well Berkeley recipes on our garden page.

The Staff Garden always welcomes new volunteers who can help maintain the garden the first Friday of every month (sign up here). Please also join us for the Be Well in the Garden event!

Topics included: relaxation & recharging, money, nutrition, and exercise.

Mindfulness Mondays
Mondays | 12:10-12:30pm | Online

Join Liza Schlosser-Olroyd for a short mindfulness practice at 12:10 on Mondays! As we continue working and living through unprecedented times in many ways, developing a mindfulness practice is a nourishing way to fill our own cups and cultivate resilience over time. This is a chance to come together and share a mindful moment with one another before we take on the rest of our week. Hope to see you there!
