With the help of many donors we did it! Over 479 acres (194 hectares) of historical and ecologically important land has been purchased for conservation in the Similkameen Valley, including the Keremeos Columns formation.

The Keremeos Columns Grassland conservation area is located in the Similkameen Valley within the traditional territory of the Smelqmix and Syilx Peoples. The conservation area is adjacent to the 20 hectare Keremeos Columns Provincial Park, increasing the size of the protected land by almost ten-fold and connecting seven crucial and sensitive ecosystems.
The Keremeos Columns Grassland conservation area has a rich history. Surrounded by Douglas-fir trees within this conservation area, vertical hexagonal basalt columns rise above the forest. The Columns are a unique geological formation that was created over 30 million years ago during high volcanic activity. The Keremeos Columns formation is best observed from viewpoints within the Keremeos Columns Provincial Park.

This month we sat down with Dr. Jasper Lament to talk about nature-based solutions, conservation challenges in BC, and his winding path to becoming CEO of The Nature Trust of BC.

Despite the rising threats of climate change and biodiversity loss, Jasper remains optimistic “I see society starting to take nature more seriously and I’m hopeful that in the next 50 years we’ll do a better job of protecting what we have more than we have over the past 50 years. There’s a great opportunity for organizations like The Nature Trust of BC to help show the way and help make a difference,” he said.

The Nature Trust of British Columbia is pleased to congratulate Katherine Carbeck and Kephra Beckett on receiving the Bert Hoffmeister Scholarship in Forest Wildlife at UBC.

Katherine Carbeck's Ph.D work focuses on species’ capacity to adapt to ongoing environmental challenges resulting from climate change.

Kephra Beckett is pursuing her Master’s Degree in conservation. She is studying the impacts of Black-tailed Deer browsing on plant and bumblebee communities in the Southern Gulf Islands.
