President Johnson Visits Community Development

Pres Johnson Visit.jpg

On Friday May 6, Susan Colbert, who retired from Extension in 2021 had a visit with Kristina Johnson, President of Ohio State University. President Johnson and partners from the University District and Weinland Park communities were present to hear Susan speak about the great work that she was a part of during her time with Extension.

“Having our office in the heart of the community and listening directly to their needs has truly made the difference in our being able to assess their situation and take on a more community asset-based approach. I have gained an appreciation for the role of community education and how it can help empower residents with the knowledge, resources and skills essential in helping people improve the quality of their lives. Moreover, I've come to realize that we shouldn't underestimate the power of people, places and partners in a community. From my experience in working in Weinland Park over the past 20 years, I've come to learn that despite the challenges the neighborhood faced over the years, the people, places and partners were a major asset and they always took great pride in their family, friendships and community. All of which, I fervently believe is why this neighborhood was able to survive and thrive. Conclusively, I strongly believe that the university can't make progress in a community without the support and cooperation of people and partners.” Susan Colbert

The celebration will kick off a day early with a tour of the Worthington Community Garden. Garden tours will be hosted daily at various sites around Franklin County. Sunday's event will be held at Franklin Park Conservatory. The week will conclude on Saturday, June 11, with a community garden party at the Kunz-Brundige Franklin County Extension Building. The activities are free and perfect for all ages!

Tick Talk with Dr. Tim McDermott

Warm weather means more time outside enjoying nature. It also means the beginning of heavy tick season. Dr. McDermott recently chatted with a member of the OSU College of Food, Agriculture and Environmental Sciences communications office about the status of ticks in Ohio. Dr. McDermott shared the tick population is on the rise in Ohio and will likely continue to increase. You may read the complete article including tips on keeping safe here.
