We are excited to announce that Laker Hockey will host the Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves on Friday, October 13 and Saturday, October 14 for Great Lake State Weekend!
Great Lake State Weekend is for all ages of the Laker Community and LSSU parents and students are welcome. It is a campus-wide celebration welcoming the LSSU community, alumni, and friends for fun-filled family events to enjoy. Festivities will include Alumni Award Ceremony, Athletic Hall of Fame Award Ceremony, Tailgating, and cheering on Laker Hockey.

Learn to Swim with Lake Superior State University | |
Lake Superior State University will be offering LEARN TO SWIM classes throughout the summer. Classes will take place Saturday, Monday and Wednesday Mornings and Monday and Wednesday Evenings. Each additional child registered receives a $5 discount. Returning participants should register their swimmer for the recommended class level. New registrants should register for based on skill level.
Each session will be 8 classes long. Please take a look at our complete list as we have added many options.
Please note this year, you must register for a specific skill level. The skill levels include:
GUPPY
Must be at least 5 years of age and able to separate from parents or guardians at lesson time. Also must be able to follow all instructions
PERCH
Must be at least 5 years of age and able to separate from parents or guardians at lesson time. Also must be able to follow all instructions.
Must also be able to:
- Blow bubbles through mouth and nose
- Bob
- Tread water
- Open eyes under water to retrieve object
- Roll from front to back and back to front
- Back float
- Front and back glides
- Alternating arms on front and back
TROUT
Must be at least 5 years of age and able to separate from parents or guardians at lesson time. Also must be able meet all Perch requirements and follow all instructions.
Must also be able to:
- Enter water by jumping in
- Fully submerge and hold breath
- Front and back glides
- Front and back floats
- Combined arms and legs on front and back
- Change direction while swimming on back
- Recover to a float position
PIKE
Must be at least 5 years of age and able to separate from parents or guardians at lesson time. Also must be able meet all Trout requirements and follow all instructions.
Must also be able to:
- Headfirst entry from side sitting or kneeling
- Rotary breathing
- Dolphin kicks on front
- Elementary backstroke
- Scissors kick
- Change direction on front
- Push off in streamline position
MUSKIE
Must be at least 5 years of age and able to separate from parents or guardians at lesson time. Also must be able meet all Pike requirements and follow all instructions.
Must also be able to:
- Headfirst entry from stride position
- Swim under water
- Front crawl and backstroke open turns
- Front crawl, backstroke, elementary backstroke, and learning breaststroke and butterfly
- Tread water with 2 different kicks

LSSU Center for Freshwater Research and Education
All smiles were had as we bid farewell to the Atlantic Salmon during the annual release! Approximately 28,530 fish, successfully raised by Hatchery Technician Megan Thompson and LSSU students, were stocked directly into the St. Marys River for anglers across the Great Lakes to enjoy!

Heidi Rife '03, was a recipient of the 2023 Outstanding Part Time Awards. To receive consideration for the award, faculty were nominated by a colleague, student, or someone within the community. The main focus of this award is to acknowledge faculty's commitment to education and excellence in service to others. | |
Jennifer J. France '98, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. France was selected on the basis of current reference value. Many factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field were taken into account during the selection process.

Trevor Adkins '18 was given commendations in recognition of his lifesaving actions in the line of duty by Sault Police Chief Wesley Bierling and the city commission. Officer Adkins saved a man's life by applying medical aid to the victim's injured arm until the ambulance arrived.

35 Lake Superior State (LSSU) student-athletes received Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) All-Academic honors with 17 earning Academic Excellence, as announced by the league office on Monday, June 12. Read More.

Abbie Laajala has been promoted to Associate Athletic Director after spending the previous two years serving as the Assistant Athletic Director of External Relations as well as the Senior Woman Administrator in the Lake Superior State (LSSU) Athletic Department, as announced by LSSU Athletic Director, Dr. Dave Diles, on Monday, June 19. Former Lake Superior State University hockey player and Head Coach Rick Comley will be inducted into the 2023 Michigan Sports Hall of Fame this September.
Comley has been making an impact on college hockey ever since his freshman season at LSSU when he led his team in assists, a feat that he would accomplish two more times in his collegiate career with the Lakers. His performances on the ice resulted in him being named an NAIA All-American as a freshman, and he was ultimately named as the team's captain for his senior campaign in 1970-71. To this day, Comley still holds the sixth place mark for career assists in a Laker uniform. Read More.

Our next Lake Superior State University alumni event will be at Comerica Park for the Tigers v. Padres game on Saturday, July 22 at 6 p.m. EST. An informal, pre-game meet-up will take place inside Comerica Park at Comerica Landing in right field.
A portion of the proceeds from each ticket sold will come back to support Lake Superior State University. This popular event usually sells out, so order your tickets early!
