CRI Faculty Spotlight
Meet Dr. Kristin Kirkby Shaw!
CRI's June Faculty Spotlight is Kristin Kirkby Shaw, DVM, MS, PhD, CCRT, DACVS, DACVSMR. Kristin is a small animal surgeon and rehabilitation specialist whose career has focused on bridging the gap between these two disciplines, with specific emphasis on management of osteoarthritis and chronic pain. Kristin is a past president of the American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians, a frequent invited speaker at national and international veterinary conferences, and the author of numerous journal articles and textbook chapters. She now works for Zoetis as the company's pain/OA/surgery/rehabilitation specialist.
A few fun facts about Kristin …
Start work late or leave work early? I didn’t know that leaving work early was ever an option??
Messy desk or clean desk? Are we talking #goals or #reality here?
Win the lottery and not work or land your dream job and work forever? Can I win the lottery and continue to work? That opens up more dream jobs if I don’t have to worry about making ends meet.
Pizza or tacos? So easy – pizza
Puppies or kittens? Puppies
Read Dr. Kristin Kirkby Shaw’s biography on the CRI website, and check our Facebook page for more fun facts about Dr. Kristin!

Proposed Canadian Consensus Guidelines on Osteoarthritis Treatment Based on OA-COAST Stages 1–4
Frontiers in Veterinary Science, April 2022
Authors: Conny Mosley, et al, 2022.
Abstract: The Canadian consensus guidelines on OA treatment were created from a diverse group of experts, with a strong clinical and/or academic background in treating OA in dogs. The document is a summary of the treatment recommendations made by the group, with treatments being divided into either a core or secondary recommendation. Each treatment or modality is then summarized in the context of available research based support and clinical experience, as the treatment of OA continues to be a multimodal and commonly a multidisciplinary as well as individualized approach. The guidelines aim to help clinicians by providing clear and clinically relevant information about treatment options based on COAST defined OA stages 1-4.

June Events from Onlinepethealth
Good morning, Vetrehabbers! Welcome to June! It feels quite surreal that we are already hitting the midpoint of 2023 — it has been an incredible 2023 so far for Onlinepethealth, and we look forward to continuing to learn and grow together with our community in the second half of the year, as we head towards the Vet Rehab Summit in November. 💚
This month, Onlinepethealth Members can look forward to 5 phenomenal webinars being released. Two small animal lectures airing include systemic diseases in performance dogs with Sarah Love and fibrotic myopathy rehabilitation with Leilani Alvarez. Equine webinars this month include the final webinar in a series of 4 webinars with Gillian Tabor, focusing on tendon rehabilitation — the final webinar looks at complex tendon and ligament injuries in other areas of the body — think peroneus tertius, supraspinous ligament, and biceps brachii tendons. We also welcome Raquel Butler as she dives into bodywork for foals and young horses. Hydrotherapists can look forward to a phenomenal webinar with Debbie Torraca this month on advanced exercise techniques for the pelvic limbs.

|
We are gearing up towards the Vet Rehab Summit on the 10th and 11th of November, where we welcome Vibeke Elbrond and Rikke Schultz to lecture on the equine and canine myofascial chains and how we can influence them in rehabilitation. It is going to be a phenomenal two days — make sure that you join us live!!

Breezie Dog Professor of the Month
Our June Breezie Dog Professor of the Month is Duncan, who is owned by Janet Williams. "Duncan came to live with us in 2016," Janet says. "He was retiring from the conformation ring. His favorite things in life are his cat, Peggy, and his little human girl, Vivian. He has tried a few different performance sports but only really enjoys fast cat. Oh! And he would love to compete in Olympic Napping."
In recognition of this honor, Duncan will receive a $50 gift certificate from Jiminy's good for any of their treats or dog food. Congratulations, Duncan!
