June 6, 2023

June is here, which means summer is on the horizon! As you are gearing up for your summer activities, Stilly Valley Health Connections is getting ready to participate in some community events. You can find us beginning with the Stilly Valley Center's Wellness Fair on June 14th. We will also be at the Arlington Street Fair on July 7th, 8th, and 9th. On Saturday, August 12th, we will be attending the Arlington Community Resource Center Back-to-School event at President's Elementary. We invite you to attend these fairs to find resources and more information on our upcoming classes and events.

If you're curious about local produce, you can come visit our booth at the Arlington Farmer's Market in Legion Park on June 17th, July 22nd, and August 26th. We will be sharing our booth with the wonderful team from Sound Dietitians, LLC. They will be handing out seasonal recipes, testing your market produce knowledge, and offering market tours upon request. While you are visiting our booth, you can brainstorm with a dietitian on what you can do with your freshly picked produce from the market.

We are also down to the last two cooking demonstrations in our Blue Zones series. Our next class will be on the Loma Linda, California Blue Zone on Thursday, June 15th. Our final class is on Thursday, July 20th, and will focus on the Sardinia, Italy Blue Zone. These classes have been highly attended, so be sure to register to attend online, or come in person to sample the delicious flavors of the Blue Zones.

We will look forward to seeing you this summer.

Water Safety Tips for Families

Tops Tips for Swimming Safety

Excerpt from Safe Kids Worldwide: https://www.safekids.org/poolsafety

  1. Watch kids when they are in or around water. Keep young children and weak swimmers within arm’s reach of an adult. Make sure more experienced swimmers are with a partner every time.
  2. Choose a Water Watcher. When there are several adults present, choose one to be responsible for watching children in or near the water for a certain period of time, such as 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, select another adult to be the Water Watcher.
  3. Teach children how to swim. Every child is different, so enroll children in swim lessons when they are ready. Consider their age, development and how often they are around water.
  4. Make sure kids learn these five water survival skills.
  • Step or jump into water over their head and return to the surface.
  • Turn around in the water and orient to safety.
  • Float or tread water.
  • Combine breathing with forward movement in the water.
  • Exit the water.
  1. Teach children that swimming in open water is different from swimming in a pool. Be aware of situations that are unique to open water, such as limited visibility, depth, uneven surfaces, currents and undertow. These potential hazards can make swimming in open water more challenging than swimming in a pool.
  2. Learn CPR and basic water rescue skills. It is important to know how to respond in an emergency without putting yourself at risk of drowning. Learning these skills may help you save a life.
