Anne Boykin Institute Summer Academy 2023

The Anne Boykin Institute will offer a Summer Academy on "Aesthetics: Re-presenting Caring Values Through Art." The academy will be held at FAU's College of Nursing in Boca Raton on June 21, 22 and 23, with an option to attend either in person or virtually. Q&A with College of Nursing Advisory Board Member Kristian Poitier, AVP, Academic Engagement and Strategies, HCA East Florida Division

What inspired you to get involved and support FAU’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing as an advisory board member?

Being new to the state, I have been impressed at the pursuit of excellence that FAU’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing exhibits. From the dean to the faculty, their dedication to advancing the field of nursing through research and innovation is palpable. 


What do you admire most about our students?

I greatly admire the students' dedication to learning along with their consistent professionalism on campus.


What is your hope for the future of the College?

It is my wish that the College will exceed its strategic goals, and that it will continue to be nationally recognized for advancing nursing in new spaces. 


Could you share some of your professional and personal interests?

I am big on professional development and empowerment. Additionally, I teach emotional intelligence concepts, and I am a certified change agent and advanced TeamSTEPPS Master Trainer. Also, I love coming up with ideas for events, and I am a woman of faith.

Spring 2023 Ph.D. graduate Marla Mygatt was selected to serve as a U.S. delegate for the Citizen Ambassador Program with the National Association of School Nurses to the United Arab Emirates (UAB), from May 26 to June 2. The primary objective for this delegation was to gain an understanding and appreciation for the role of school nurses in the UAB, and the standards, education and certifications within the field.

The Graduate College regularly hosts hour-long information sessions to provide prospective students with an overview of FAU and the graduate admissions process. Most sessions are held virtually. View the upcoming schedule here.

Alumni Spotlight: Jacinto "J" Garrido


Accomplished Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing alumnus Jacinto “J” Garrido, Ph.D. ’17, DNP ’12, has a distinguished 26-year career as a retired Captain and advanced practice nurse in the United States Public Health Service (PHS).


Garrido is most known for his role in developing the Special Operations Medical Unit, which is known today as the IHSC Special Operations Unit (ISOU). As chief, he created a cadre of health care providers with specialized medical skillsets to support air, land and sea operations.


After retiring from active duty, Garrido pursued an interest in higher education. He helped universities develop advanced practice nursing programs to support clinical opportunities for nurse practitioner students. In addition, he worked as an adjunct faculty member at Florida Atlantic University where he taught leadership courses and supported the College of Nursing’s graduate clinical programs. Read More

News and Events

The College of Nursing will be a keynote sponsor of the Nursing Consortium of Florida on Friday, June 23, at the Signature Grand in Davie, FL. The program will include a poster session, panel discussion and keynote presentation from Jeff Doucette, Press Ganey's Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer.

The College will host its inaugural dermatology symposium, “Foundations in Dermoscopy,” on Saturday, July 29, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., in the College of Nursing Auditorium on the Boca Raton campus. The keynote speaker for the event will be Dr. Ashfaq A. Marghoob, a world-renowned authority in dermoscopy and director of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Hauppauge, Long Island. Save the date for the College of Nursing's annual faculty retreat on Monday, Aug. 14 at the Hillsboro Club, in Hillsboro Beach, FL.

Assistant Dean Suzanne Ffolkes represented the College of Nursing at the Nurses Month Professional Development Day on May 18. The event, hosted by Broward Health Imperial Point, attracted more than 80 participants who received career resources and guidance on how to excel in their professional nursing journeys.

On May 20, several College of Nursing faculty and staff, together with Dean George, attended the YWCA of West Palm Beach's 105th gala. The College of Nursing was among the event sponsors. The YWCA of Palm Beach County is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to eliminating racism and empowering women.

Research News

As part of Dr. Rita Gengo's (PI) $5,000 grant award from Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), Sigma Foundation for Nursing, the team is now actively recruiting participants for their study, "Psychometric Validation of the Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS) in Individuals with Heart Failure." The project aims to provide robust evidence of the validity and reliability of the modified fatigue impact scale (MFIS) to assess fatigue in individuals with heart failure (HF). College of Nursing co-investigators on this study are Drs. Candy Wilson and Mary Ann Leavitt.

Faculty and Staff

On May 10, Dr. Candy Wilson was the guest speaker for the West Palm Beach VA Healthcare System's Nurses Week Virtual Presentation. Wilson shared her military nursing career from clinical nurse to research scientist and led a discussion about important women's health topics.

Dr. Rebecca Koszalinski has been accepted to the 2023 class of the Fellow of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (FARN). Fellow status is one of the highest honors ARN can bestow on a nurse and attests to her dedication to the practice of rehabilitation nursing.

The Gerontological Society of America has awarded Dr. Lisa Wiese Fellow status. The Society is the world’s oldest and largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to research, education and practice in the field of aging. 

The SAMHSA Communities Talk Prevention on Substance Abuse on May 10 featured Dr. Armiel Suriaga as a panelist. He joined the Communities Talk to Prevent Alcohol and Other Drug Misuse team for a conversation that showcased prevention success stories in four diverse communities. 

Gateway Technical College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, presented Dr. Debra Hain with a distinguished alumni award. She graduated from Gateway with a Practical Nursing degree in 1980, and an associate's degree in Nursing in 1985.

In May, Dr. Armiel Suriaga presented his research titled, "The Neural Consequences and Firearm-Related Fatalities Among Decedents with Cannabis Use," at the Consortium for Medical Marijuana Clinical Outcomes Research Conference in Orlando. Other co-authors are Drs. Ruth M. Tappen, Cassandra Atkin-Plunk, Adam Dobrin from FAU's College of Social Work and Criminal Justice, and Ester Cajina (BSN student).

Dean George appeared in a CBS12 interview regarding the results of a recent FAU College of Nursing and Cross Country Healthcare survey that revealed one-third of nurses expect to leave the profession within two years. A May 12 Study Finds article, "Hospitals in peril? Only 1 in 3 nurses plan to stay on job in 2025," discussed the results of the recent joint study between FAU's College of Nursing and Cross Country Healthcare. Read More
