STRIVE U

Second Year STRIVE U Student’s participated in the 76th SMCC Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 21, 2023. These 4 students have worked incredibly hard over the last two years and should be very proud of all of their accomplishments.

On campus, the students worked together to plant a vegetable garden and are taking turns making sure the garden is getting watered regularly! The students are excited to try the vegetables when they are ready. The basketball hoop has also made its return from winter storage and students are staff are loving it! They have been shooting around and playing games almost daily!

Get Cookin’ Replay

Last month we told you we were hosting free Cooking & Meal Planning webinars on 5/9. Now we want to tell you how it went! And boy did it go well! We had 372 registrants from 42 states and 6 countries! If you are interested, you can check out the recording from one of the sessions here.

We had a blast sharing our program, and here’s what some of our attendees had to say:

·       Your energy and games make this a lot of fun for all ages and abilities!

·       This is such a great idea. Courses like this would help my son.

·       We loved it! It was nicely put together.

·       I am so happy I came across this on Disability Scoop and signed up. I wasn't sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised and hopefully I can figure out how to get my son to take part in this program.

·       It was an excellent and great experience for me.

We hope to see you at our next event!

TOPS

TOPS has had a busy month preparing 11 of our students for graduation! Each student completed a final project along with writing their graduation speech. On the 30th, our students all spoke at graduation, speaking to the audience with confidence! We welcomed over 100 guests to our Foden Road location, our biggest crowd yet!

Our returning students worked hard throughout the month to identify goals for the next year, practiced self-advocacy with a guest speaker from Disability Rights Maine and spent most days outdoors enjoying the beautiful spring weather.

STRIVE Bayside

This month we have really worked on getting out and about in the community. Participants at Bayside have enjoyed tours of places like Wilbur’s of Maine Chocolate Confections in Freeport and the Portland International Jetport. We have been interested in learning about what these businesses do for our community and the different job opportunities available. In addition to the Ronald McDonald House, we have also started a new volunteer opportunity at Maine Needs in Portland.

This month we also had a new participant join our afternoon crew- Jaden! He has been a great addition to the group, impressing us all with his amazing art skills!

STRIVE Bayside is a unique community supports program that is dedicated to exploring and increasing independence. Some of the goals we work on are grocery shopping, budgeting, cleaning, navigating the community, cooking and social skills. We run five days a week, Monday through Friday and have two daily sessions, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm and 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm. We operate out of an apartment in down town Portland to simulate actual apartment living. If you would like more information about our program, or to schedule a tour please contact Kim O'Connor at [email protected].

ACTIVE/WAVES

ACTIVE: This month we’ve been spending lots of time outdoors! We’ve been checking out local trails, and even helping out with trail clean-up. To get outdoors more, we have been hiking, going for walks, playing basketball, and volunteer gardening. Getting outside more has helped us to have healthier minds and bodies!

WAVES: This month we cooked up lots of fun recipes in the new Foden Rd. kitchens! We’ve made soup, burgers, and other fun and delicious meals! We’ve tried lots of new things, and have even added some original recipes to our recipe books. Cooking is a good way to practice mindfulness, improve concentration, reduce stress, and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

STRIVE Studios

STRIVE Studios has been busy creating and exploring art outside and in our community. Groups have been learning how to make clay maracas, use paint markers, are wrapping up the yearbook, and going outside to take photographs and find materials to incorporate into their projects. We started off the month with an in person visit from Mia at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, where we created fabric collages. And later, our Art in the Community group visited the UNE Art Gallery at their Portland Campus, and had a tour with Gallery Director, Hilary. We have also been gearing up for our exhibition at the Riverton Public Library, which will be on view from June 2-30. This will be a showcase of a wide range projects our groups have created over the last several weeks such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sewing, and paper mâché sculpture. We're excited to share our artwork with the community!

Meet Amy! Amy is one of our summer Camp STRIVE counselors and is currently working in our Wednesday Night Education Series and at STRIVE Night! Amy's favorite part about STRIVE is "spending every Wednesday evening supporting participants with STRIVE's Wednesday Night Educational Series. It is heartwarming to see participants thrive and develop their writing and creativity skills. I get to end my week at STRIVE Night listening to amazing karaoke and witness participants engaging socially with one another. I am happy to work for such a caring organization." Thanks, Amy, we're grateful to have you!
