Help Protect Rare Grasslands and Vital Corridor for Endangered Wildlife in South Okanagan

The Nature Trust of British Columbia has been given the opportunity to purchase 11 hectares (27 acres) of rare and ecologically important temperate grasslands along the Similkameen River, on the traditional territory of the Lower Similkameen Indian Band (Sməlqmix) and Okanagan Nation (Sylix People).

Known as the Nighthawk Hill Grasslands, the area is an important wildlife corridor that allows animals to access the river from the South Okanagan Grasslands Provincial Protected area, an adjacent massive 9,364 hectare protected area. The site is home to a diverse range of imperiled species, including the at-risk Pallid Bat, American Badger, Western Harvest Mouse, and Nuttall's Cottontail. Plus, the site is home to eight at-risk birds, such as the Sage Thrasher, Barn Swallow, Common Nighthawk, and more.

We must raise $425,000 by December 31st to protect this critical wildlife corridor and rare grassland habitat. Help us reach our goal by donating today:
Cowichan River Estuary Restoration Project
The Nature Trust of BC is a proud partner on the largest estuary restoration project on Vancouver Island. The Cowichan Estuary Restoration Project will restore over 70 hectares of natural estuarine marshlands, a vitally important habitat for wild Pacific salmon and the interconnected ecosystems that rely on them. The project aims to enhance estuary resilience against rising sea-levels.

From Classroom to Conservation

For the past year, the Okanagan community has come together to empower the next generation of outdoor stewards and work to restore Antelope-brush, one of BC's rarest and most endangered ecosystems.

This collaborative project engaged over 200 youth in stewardship activities to protect the Antelope-brush ecosystem. The Nature Trust of BC supported the project through outreach and planting days at our Antelope-brush conservation area.
