Register Now for Fall 2023 Semester
WNC will welcome students for the Fall 2023 semester in two months. Students can search a list of offered classes at wnc.edu/class-schedule/index.php and receive help with their schedule in Academic Advising and Access. Fall semester begins Monday, Aug. 28.
Record Number of Science Students
Participate in INBRE Research Projects
For many WNC students participating in the IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) program in June, it was their first experience with scientific research. A record 18 undergraduates participated in three-week research projects that culminated in public presentations on June 27.
396 Students Recognized on Dean's List
Western is delighted to announce that 396 students are on the Spring 2023 Dean’s List for accumulating a GPA of 3.50 or higher while taking 12 units or more.
Students Honored for Earning
Electrician Level I Skills Certificate
Western Nevada College’s first cohort of the Northern Nevada Independent Electrical Contractors (NNVIEC) training program was celebrated June 21 for earning the Electrician Level 1 Skills Certificate.

President Dr. Dalpe Attends National Education Conference in DC
WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe recently attended a national discussion in Washington, DC, on the future of higher education presented by the Urban Institute, a nonprofit research organization that provides data and evidence to help advance upward mobility and equity.
Congratulations to WNC's Four Emeritus Appointments for 2023
Western’s 2023 emeritus recipients are former Executive Assistant Kelly Kiesow, retiring Human Resources Assistant Director Brenda Yenkole, Faculty Senate Chair and Mathematics Professor Jim Strange and retiring Institutional Research and Effectiveness Director Cathy Fulkerson.
NSHE Chancellor Search Narrows to Three Candidates
The search for the next chancellor has been rigorous and extensive and three finalists have emerged as top contenders for this prestigious role. The finalists are Charles Ansell, M.S.; Lawrence M. Drake II, Ph.D. and Kathleen M. Marshall, J.D. An announcement of the next chancellor could come as early as Friday, June. 30.
WNC Foundation Welcomes Brook Sweeting to Board of Trustees
New Western Nevada College Foundation Board Trustee Brook Sweeting has already helped make a difference with the college fundraising arm’s main focus: students. Not long after joining WNC Foundation, Sweeting suggested that the Carson City Chamber Leadership Institute Class of 2023 dedicate its project to help fundraise for the remodeling of WNC’s Veterans Resource Center.


WNC Wins Best Table Decor Title at FISH Waiter of the Year Fundraiser
President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe’s team earned top billing in table decor at FISH’s Waiter of the Year contest earlier this month. Foundation Executive Director Niki Gladys and Foundation Trustee Maria Denzler decorated WNC’s winning table.

Ten of 23 WNC employees celebrating anniversaries this month are being recognized for serving five or more years working for the Nevada System of Higher Education.

Reopening of Remodeled Veterans Resource Center Attracts Large Crowd
More than 100 curious community members and WNC supporters gathered to celebrate the grand reopening of the Veterans Resource Center. A generous donation from NV Energy Foundation to WNC Foundation and the fundraising efforts of the Carson City Chamber Leadership Institute Class of 2023 enabled Western to remodel the VRC to make it more comfortable and resourceful for student veterans and their families.

To commemorate the value of Jack C. Davis Observatory to WNC and the public, Western Nevada College Foundation has created a 20th anniversary coin.
Expanding CDL Program Benefitting from Instructors' Vast Experience
By the time test day at the DMV arrives for students in WNC’s Commercial Driver’s License program, they’ll know their instructors have provided them with the driving skills and knowledge to successfully pass their CDL Class A driver’s license tests. Given that they are learning from instructors Fred de Alba, Joseph Terry and Butch Gordo, who collectively have more than 100 combined years of employment with a CDL license, aspiring CDL drivers will have a competitive edge coming out of the five-week training program.
Community Celebrates Summer Solstice at Jack C. Davis Observatory
Jack C. Davis Observatory celebrated the longest daylight day of the year by inviting the community for a sunspot viewing event on June 21. Attendees viewed the Sun with several telescopes and learned more about the solstice and analemma patterns on observatory's deck from Director Dr. Thomas Herring and Physics Instructor Gary Swift.
Child Development Center Recognizes Preschool Graduates with Diplomas
WNC’s Child Development Center celebrated the graduation of 20 children in its annual Preschool Wildcat Graduation.
Foundation Investment Provider Hosts Team-Bonding Event at Aces Game
Washoe Wealth Advisors invited Western Nevada College Foundation’s Finance Committee to a team-building event at an Aces game at Greater Nevada Field on June 20. Financial Advisors James Lewis and Gregory Raleigh, who represent WWA — the Foundation’s investment provider — entertained attendees, including Sean Davison (pictured here with Aces mascot Archie).
Artist Uses Illusion to Captivate Viewers of 'Desire' Exhibit in Bristlecone Gallery
The next time that you walk into the Bristlecone Main Gallery, you may think that someone brought colorful donuts to share and that someone or something is watching you. Upon closer examination, the well-decorated cushions and the dangling eyes actually are part of the Eunkang Koh’s “Desire” art exhibit presented by the Capital City Arts Initiative. It will be on display through Sept. 14.

Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs Finish Line Moves to John L. Harvey Field
After one of the heaviest snow loads that Lake Tahoe has seen, you might think that ultrarunners in the Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs might need snow shoes instead of running shoes. But the July 15 and 16 event is going on as planned, with all three races starting and finishing at Western Nevada College's John L. Harvey Field.
