The monthly newsletter of the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network (TSPN)

Call to action

Our call to action is one way to encourage and engage

all members of our community in suicide prevention efforts

Over the last several months, we have put forward a number of calls to action for everyone to share the word and support our suicide prevention efforts. Please continue to participate as inclined and share widely! See the list below for some ways to get involved, and you can also reach out to your regional and program directors to learn more.

Zero Suicide

As we continue efforts to implement Zero Suicide (ZS) across health and behavioral health agencies throughout Tennessee, we want to hear from you. Has your agency implemented any part of ZS, or are you interested in learning more about the program?

To participate, please respond to this brief Zero Suicide survey to help us track our progress.

Interested, yet unfamiliar with Zero Suicide? Learn more here:

Be the One

Know of someone wanting more training in suicide prevention? Help us identify individuals and organizations across Tennessee interested in taking the

"Be the One" Suicide Prevention Campaign training.

"Be the One" is a suicide prevention gatekeeper training with three primary learning objectives:

  • Overviews suicide awareness and social marketing strategies by providing information regarding suicide and serves as a reminder that suicide can happen at any time to anyone
  • Teaches participants how to recognize when someone may be thinking about suicide, how to ask the question directly and offers tips on how to develop good listening skills, which is a key component of suicide prevention
  • Details postvention suggestions in the event a suicide occurs to someone in the workforce

Visit the "Be the One" website to learn more. Interested individuals and organizations can email tspn@tspn.org for upcoming training details.

ESSENCE Alerts

The ESSENCE system provides subscribers with current county and statewide data in suicidal behavior and risk factor based on reports of suicide-related ER visits. Behavioral health providers, physicians, school staff, and mental health activists can use data from ESSENCE Alerts to mobilize and tailor their mental health and suicide prevention outreach.

Learn more about ESSENCE and sign up for alerts at https://tspn.org/essence

If you are already signed up for ESSENCE Alerts, you can provide feedback about how alerts are received here: ESSENCE Subscriber Survey.

The Rutherford County Suicide Prevention Coalition staged an exhibit at this year's Women's Wellness Expo, staged by the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority at Patterson Park Community Center in Murfreesboro on May 4.

Interested in having TSPN at your upcoming event? Reach out to your Regional Director to set something up--contact information for each region is available in the monthly calendar section.

Several staff members attended the American Association of Suicidology's annual conference in Las Vegas in May. They brought back information about what other states and agencies are doing to build their capacity for prevention, intervention, and postvention.

A few of them took a break from the proceedings for a quick dinner at the Eiffel Tower Restaurant within the Paris Hotel. Featured, from left to right: Executive Director Anna Sever, South Central Regional Director Mary Anne Christian, Mid-Cumberland Regional Director Darrell Bouldin, Youth Program Director Kearee Jackson, Northeast Regional Director Cori Johnson, and Southeast Regional Director Bryan Barks.

South Central Regional Director Mary Anne Christian (out front, with her service dog-in-training Jasper) and Southwest Regional Director Emily Lunn (farthest right) co-facilitated another ASIST training for Mental Health Cooperative this month,

this one with Centerstone staff joining in.

Interested in learning more about ASIST and how to set up a session for your counselors and clinicians? Email your Regional Director for details!
