June 2024 Grants Newsletter

It's Budget Season!

It’s June. And in Pennsylvania that means that the General Assembly and the administration are in the midst of the budget. The state’s fiscal year ends on June 30, 2024 with the new budget setting appropriations for the next fiscal year’s work. As a result, it is rare that new grant opportunities are announced at this time of the year.

But you can still put this time to good use.

No matter the project, funding programs are provided when there is a clear and concise need. You can prepare now for potential opportunities in the future.

Consider These Tips

Craft an Executive Summary (aka one-pager)

For many programs, the first step is providing a general overview of the project and funding needs. This is a brief (typically one page) description of your project, its goals and objectives, the need, the cost, and outcomes.

Including the basics – who, what, why, where, when and how – is a simple guideline. Who is seeking the funding and who will benefit? What is the specific project? Why is this project important and/or why is the funding needed? Where will the project be located, or where will services be provided? When is the funding needed? How else will it be funded, or supported?

There’s no need to limit yourself to just one. Have a variety of programs that may benefit from outside funding? Create a one-pager for each of them as you never know what opportunities may exist.

Draft a Budget

More detailed information on how you arrived at the budget is always helpful. Many grant programs will fund specific items but may not cover everything that you need. By having detailed information available, including quotations and other costs used to set your budget, you can easily pull out responsive items and quickly pivot when grant opportunities are available.

Identify Your Team, Stakeholders, and Partners

Many funding agencies and organizations want to know who they’re working with when they’re supporting a project. If it’s not already clear, identify who your team is for the organization and the project. Spell out the stakeholders that have a vested interest in the work that you’re doing, and the people and organizations that you’ll work with throughout the process.

Make the Case

Be prepared to give a quick summary of the project and your needs, as well as a pitch as to why someone should fund your organization. You never know when an opportunity may arise and having these items at your fingertips allows you to respond quickly and be proactive when an opening presents itself.
