While summer break is just around the corner, school’s in session for Jumpstart! This semester Jumpstart Germantown partnered with the wonderful staff at Roxborough High School to bring our training program into their school.

Fifteen 11th & 12th graders from Roxborough High participated in this pilot program over the last 6 months. Speakers included Jumpstart founder Ken Weinstein, as well as Jumpstarters Jhanel Wilson, Rhakeim Miller and Khalid Green. Students followed the Jumpstart curriculum while also learning about each speaker's journey in real estate development and participating in activities to bring the lessons to life.

Throughout the program students were introduced to career opportunities including architecture, construction, brokerage, development and finance. This partnership allowed students to garner an understanding of the vast career opportunities in real estate development. And because it's Jumpstart we emphasized the importance of developing with the community in mind, of removing blight, of collaboration and sharing resources... because we can do more together than we can do alone.

Meet Russell

This month we're excited to spotlight Jumpstart graduate and borrower Russell Frederick!

After finishing the Jumpstart Germantown training program, Russell completed two single family renovations in North Philly with the Jumpstart loan program. He's now moved onto duplex conversions in West Philly, and work is currently underway on his fourth project with us.

Here's his quick tip for new developers:

"There will be many ups & downs throughout your development journey for sure. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, but be sure to learn from them. Ask a lot of questions and leverage your resources (inspectors, contractors and developers). Developers before you have gone through similar situations and would love to give guidance. Consume a ton of information and stay abreast of what's happening in your market. Stay the course and play the long game!"
