Feature: Celebrating Volunteers' Week

From Monday 3rd to Sunday 9th June, we along with charities across the UK, marked a very important occasion. Volunteers' Week runs for a week every year to mark the amazing contribution volunteers make to communities, and is a chance to publicly recognise, celebrate and thank, all the incredible volunteers for everything they contribute to society as a whole.

Anyone who knows The Food Chain will know that our services are largely delivered by an incredible team of over 150 volunteers. We wouldn't get very far at all without them! Here's just a flavour of all that they do...

Lead Cooks and Kitchen Assistants prepare and serve delicious lunches twice a week while Hosts make everyone feel welcome and comfortable; Dietetic Support Volunteers arrange deliveries of fresh food and groceries; Nutrition Assistants give talks on nutritional topics every Saturday; Fundraisers shake tins for donations and raise awareness of our work; Events Volunteers ensure our cake sales, bingos and dinners run smoothly; Corporate Teams run quizzes, food drives and awareness campaigns; Trustees oversee the governance and strategy of the charity... and then there are the wonderfully flexible folk who answer our random and often strange requests - "driver needed to take a fridge to Hackney" or "can someone help us put a load of records on eBay?"

One of our Service Users recently sent in a thank you which says it better than we can:

"A big Thank You to everyone. I have thoroughly enjoyed my lunches but more importantly I have made some good friends and I no longer feel the isolation and the anxiety that I had prior to coming. I would like to specially say thank you to all the Hosts who are very kind and polite and always greet me with a smile on my arrival and have a coffee ready for me by the time I get my chair. The chefs and kitchen assistants are always so welcoming and make the lunch experience just like a family. The office team have been very helpful and never fail to check if all is well. Such a lovely bunch of people and I am very grateful for all you did during my visits."

The Food Chain began with volunteers, and we are proud every day of the team that has been built over the years. To all volunteers, past and present, we say a heartfelt thank you for everything you have done and continue to do.

Want to join our team? We're always recruiting, have a look at our website for the current vacancies.

We're particularly looking for Lead Cooks!

Help Build The Food Chain's Archive

Autumn 2024

Do you have a Food Chain badge from 1991? A fundraising leaflet from the early 2000s? Photos of our various kitchens during the Sunday Service days? If so then we want to hear from you!

The Bishopsgate Institute Archive documents the experiences of everyday people, and the extraordinary individuals and organisations who have strived for social, political, and cultural change. The archive holds over 150,000 books, pamphlets, maps and photographs of London, and is still growing. The archive already holds a number of The Food Chain's historical items, and now we are in the process of formally submitting the charity's archive to the institute. This means that not only will our history be safely stored and catalogued, it also means that any time anyone is accessing the archive and researching the UK's early response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, LGBTQ+ organisations or grassroots community work, The Food Chain will be included.

We are in the process of finalising details for an event in the Autumn to mark the submission but until then, if you have hidden gems from The Food Chain's past that you'd consider donating to the archive, please do get in touch.

What's coming up

£1-on-the-bill fundraising campaign

Summer 2024

The brain-child of an ex-trustee, an ex-staff member and a patron, The Food Chain is running an exciting fundraising campaign over the next few months in collaboration with some of the finest dining establishments! Kind and generous restaurants have signed up to add an optional £1 donation on the bills for their customers for a period of time over the Summer. All donations will come to The Food Chain and help us to sustain our vital services.

We’re very grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with such highly regarded restaurants, and for the kindness and support of their owners, managers and staff. Thank you also to Clifford, Teresa and to the very wonderful Jay Rayner.

Our website lists participating restaurants but running the campaign right now are Pidgin in Hackney, Manteca in Shoreditch, Lost in the Lanes in Brighton, Paladar in Southwark and Quo Vadis in Soho. Pop along and support us both!

Event dates for your diaries

We have an exciting fundraising dinner planned for Friday 26th July. One of our lovely Lead Cook Volunteers Jason will be at the helm of an Asian-inspired banquet dinner. More details and how to book coming soon!

Our fundraising team will be out and about in central London over the August Bank Holiday weekend with a fundraising pub crawl on Saturday 24th August and a great big fundraiser at Halfway to Heaven on Sunday 25th. We're always looking for volunteers to come along and shake a tin with us, email volunteering@foodchain.org.uk to sign up!

And after the storming success of Nigel's Quiz at the end of May, we've already booked him in for another one on Thursday 26th September.

More information coming soon but for now, save those dates!

What's been happening

Jay Rayner Masterchef Raffle

Thank you to everyone who bought a ticket for Jay Rayner's raffle, and a huge congratulations to the lucky winner! A grand total of £9,180 was raised which is a fantastic result. And a hundred thousand thankyous to Jay Rayner, who now has 2 big evenings of entertaining coming up!

Covent Garden Cake Sale

We had a blast as always at the Covent Garden May Fayre and Puppet Festival. Our volunteer-made sweet and savoury bakes went down a storm and were snapped up by the event's hungry crowds. The live music, puppet shows, pearly kings and queens were as wonderfully entertaining as always, and a very impressive £1,177 was raised on the day.

Thank you to all the volunteers who made the day possible and to everyone who stopped by for a snack! Looking forward to next year already.

Nice to see you (to see you nice) fundraising quiz

What a fun night we had at our quiz night at the end of May! Such hard work went into the prep for the night and it certainly showed - attendees remarked that they'd never seen such rapt attention at a quiz before. We were kept on our toes all evening with questions ranging from "Which country has the world's largest population?" to "What percentage of lifeguards suspect swimmers of stuffing their trunks?" Nigel was an amazing quizmaster - a ginormous thank you to him, and to everyone who attended. Over £1,000 was raised for The Food Chain!

"This experience has really changed the way I think about food. I really valued the opportunity provided for seeing, observing and learning. The volunteers cook delicious food!"
