Much of this derives from a fear of the unknown. Our panel will effort to demystify a hospital stay to ease some of those fears. They will cover some general information about how a hospital works, who plays what role and how decisions are made, and discuss what to be prepared for, how to manage expectations and how to advocate for a senior loved one. Panelists: Geriatricians Dr. Tzivia Moreeen, Stamford Hospital and Dr. Alison McElhone, Stamford Health. Free. RSVP by Mon., June 17th.

Wed., June 26, 12pm: Let's Talk About It: The Name Game and Lunch with Kathy BlanceWhat's in a name? According to Shakespeare, not that much, as he wrote in Romeo and Juliet: “That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

But when it comes to everyday products and advertising, the name can be crucial to its success and the history behind it can be surprising!

We’ll look at what's behind the name of some well-known products, the power of branding, and how the original brand name can morph into the common way to refer to a product OR an action (are you ‘googling’ that right now?). This program was originally scheduled in May but was postponed. Free. RSVP by Mon., June 24th.

Thurs., June 27, 12pm: Lunch at Grace Farms. Enjoy lunch with Staying Put friends while enjoying the view from the River Building at Grace Farms. Debit or Credit Card Only. RSVP by Tues., June 25th.

Hello From Kate

Do you remember the days when you would go to your mom for every minute detail of your life: To show her that little cut on your finger, or the tiny ant carrying that giant crumb on its back, or the disagreement you had with your friend over what poison ivy looks like (for the record: Leaves of three, leave them be). I recall that phase well because I am also deeply in that phase of motherhood right now. Just like when I was a kid, Adelaide (for now) comes to me for anything and everything. A scraped toe? I know which toe, and the exact coordinates of the incident within seconds. A Cheerio that isn’t in the shape of an “o”? I’ve seen more “u”s, “c”s and “n”s than General Mills would care to admit. I am her resource, her guru, her guide. And most importantly, while I might not be able to heal every wound, or close every Cheerio gap, I understand the larger picture at play. Having been in her role before I know that she is seeking both validation and solutions. I am her problem solver. And I love it because with each puzzle she confronts, I am able to equip Adelaide with the tools to start developing her own elucidations.

We do such a good job of teaching independence to our children that the thought of not having the answer or ability to problem solve seems untenable. But there are going to be times when we can’t find the answer such as, when is that Ice Cream Social at the Historical Society? (June 2!), Or will the swap shop take my kids' old stuffed animals (no!) or unused serving platters (yes!)? Or the vocabulary to absorb and understand a new piece of technology (it’s not you, it just takes practice). Here is where Staying Put is your resource, your guru, your guide. We might not have all the answers, but we sure know how to find the answer for you. Between the staff, volunteers and our relationships within the town, you can come to us for what might feel like the silliest of questions. And guess what? We love it. That is why we are here.
