Our world is made up of intersecting and interconnected systems. The work of prevention takes place within the context of these systems (think: education system, healthcare, or judicial system). As prevention professionals work to make changes – at the individual, interpersonal, community, and societal levels1–it is important to understand how systems work, so that we can influence them to ensure everyone can achieve their greatest level of health and well being. “Swimming Upstream with Data: Prevention Data Sources” is a new short video tutorial series that explains how to find data for specific interest groups using various data tools. Dr. Beverly Triana Tremain expertly guides you through the steps to learn how to find data for your state or county for military personnel and veterans, LGBTQ+ community members, and rural data for your area. Once you grasp a few basics, you’ll feel confident “swimming” in your ability to independently locate data that supports your community programs, enhances funding opportunities, improves evaluation results, and educates your community!

The Military Prevention Alliance Directory is a new information page on the South Southwest PTTC webpage where you can find contact information for prevention professionals connected to the military in the Region 6 states. These individuals actively support state, county, and city initiatives aimed at reducing substance misuse by promoting and implementing effective prevention practices. Their enthusiasm and willingness to collaborate with communities contribute to the cultivation of resilience and prevention strong communities, tribes, and states.
