A Message from our Lead Pastor, Dr. Rodney Navey

Men Following Christ

The Bible is not confusing when it speaks about men taking responsibility and leading well. From the beginning, God gave Adam clear assignments and then gave him an equal but different person, a wife, to get the job done. God made them male and female, equal but different (Genesis 1:26-27; 2:15-24). Ultimately, God held Adam as the responsible party for the Fall because he had been made the leader (Genesis 3:9). They both were guilty, but Adam, as the man, was called out first.

Throughout the OT, men failed time and time again to live and lead as God intended. Jesus came to restore what Adam and all his descendants could not get right. In Christ, we receive forgiveness and also the freedom to become what God originally intended. For men, that means to be right with God and to fulfill their God-given role in the home, in the church, and in society in general.

Male responsibility and leadership is a theme woven throughout the Bible. Jesus chose men to lead when He chose the Twelve. On Father’s Day (June 15), we as a church family will be in our series “The History of the Life of Christ: His Mission to Make Disciples” and focused on Jesus and His Men (Luke 5:1-11). Jesus calls men to follow Him. Of course, He calls women too; their role is no less significant and important. But, He specifically called men to form the leadership and foundation of the early church.

We cannot abdicate or be passive about our responsibility. At the same time, we cannot be domineering or disrespectful. God’s great design is what is good and right for men and women, for homes and for churches. Godly men lovingly lead. They protect. They sacrifice for the good of others. Paul wrote about men who follow Christ in this way, “Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her . . . Fathers . . . bring them (your children) up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” (Eph 5:25; 6:4). God meant for our families to have our protection and godly encouragement.

I hope you will gather with like-minded men on June 1 from 4-5 pm in the Lawndale Fellowship Hall to encourage one another. In the Men’s Meeting, our goal is to consider how we can serve our Lord better in our homes, in the church, and in the community. Men face unique challenges and need other men speaking into their lives and supporting one another through fellowship, discipleship meetings, retreats, and ministry projects. Come help us plan what that will look like for us.

When Paul wrote Timothy about how the church should function, he gave him clear instructions about the need for godly male leadership (1 Tim 2:8-15) and what these men look like (1 Tim 3:1-13). Healthy churches need healthy men who walk with God and lead for God.

Here are 3 ways I want to push our men in their walk with God:

  1. Gathering: there should be no question each week by family or friends where a godly man will be on Sundays. If he loves God and His people, he will show it by showing up for Him and for them.
  2. Growing: make sure you are reading at least a chapter per day through a book in the Bible at a time. You can’t lead for God if you are not willing to listen to God. And make sure you are being discipled by another godly man!
  3. Going: you have a chance to help others come to faith. You can do this in all the places God has you. The gospel is good news. Be sharing the good news wherever to whomever as often ever as you can!

Senior Adults

Cliff Stewart, Senior Adults Pastor (Interim), crstewart@lawndalebaptist.org

Senior Adult Ministry (SAM) Highlights for June:

Serving brings blessings. (James 1:19-25)—Once we trust in Christ to be saved, then what? Repentance, then faith, and then service is the order of things for the Christian life. James says, "Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls” (James 1:21 ESV). "Put away" — there is repentance. "Receive with meekness the implanted word" — there is faith leading to salvation. "But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing." (James 1:25 ESV) Do you see where the blessings are? Not to the hearer only, but to "the doer who acts." Have you "put away"? Have you "received"? Now it's time to "act." Here is where the blessings are! The mantra for the senior adult ministries is Seniors serving Christ together with others in view. Look around. Find a place to serve. You will be blessed.

Here are a few events to look forward to:

Bible Study, Wednesday Evenings—At 6:15 each Wednesday evening there is an opportunity to study God's Word together in the CLC. A very important study has just begun that helps us understand what we believe and why we believe it. Each week we will use the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 to help us step through our core beliefs "searching the Scriptures daily whether these things be so." (Acts 17:11) In June we will cover the following: Salvation; God's Purpose of Grace; The Church. Hope to see you there.

Men's Ministry Meeting—On June 1 at 4 pm the men of Lawndale will gather in the Fellowship Hall to discuss ways that we as men can serve our Lord together. It should be a time of good fellowship and encouragement. Please plan to join us if you can.

Voices of Experience Choir, Wednesday Mornings—Noah leads the VOE Choir on Wednesdays at 10 am in the Fellowship Hall. They are preparing for the upcoming Spring program here at Lawndale on Sunday, June 1 at 5 pm. I encourage everyone to attend expecting a blessing.

Prime Time Luncheons—Thanks to all who participated in our last Primetime Luncheon. We will take a break for the months of June, July, and August. On September 18 at noon we will resume the luncheons each month on the 3rd Thursday through the month of May 2026. I would love to hear from you about the things you enjoy and some suggestions on how to improve our time together.

It’s a blessing to both parties!

April Food Drive: Baptist Children’s Home—Thank you so much for participating! You know it’s been a successful food drive when all the donations can’t fit in one truck bed! We also had several gift cards donated. Thanks SO MUCH to the Baxley family—Christy and son Caleb—for their time organizing items, checking dates, and helping me deliver items to the collection site! You guys were lifesavers!

Shepherd’s Shelf: Food Pantry—We are continuing the chicken and biscuits meal in a bag through June. This idea was brought to us by one of the youth in our church, Mackenzie. It's been a big hit with our families! Here's what we need to make the meal bag: chunk chicken (12.5 oz), cream of chicken soup (10.5 oz), mixed vegetables (14.5 oz), diced potatoes (15 oz), evaporated milk (12 oz). Just one can of each. All the items are available at Food Lion for approximately $9. See our flyer at the donation table for a picture of the items. You can donate all the items to make a bag, OR donate a few items, OR donate $10 - we'll buy the items and build the bag for you. A big thank you to the Life Groups and church members who have donated for the item of the month meal in a bag!

Are you free on Tuesday afternoons from 2-3:30 pm? Do you love people and prayer? You may be the perfect fit for being a prayer partner. You’ll meet each guest, chat and get to know them, and ask, “how can we be praying for you?” Contact Linda Register to learn more about being a prayer partner.
