History and Culture Classes

New classes have just been added in our History and Culture department and are open for registration

The first two are walking tours led by Jordan Copeland, an educator who has compiled substantial original research on local Scarsdalian history. Walking Tour: Development of Downtown Scarsdale (Course 13397), on Thursday, June 12, 2025, explores the central business section of the village and its history, through an investigation of old photographs, maps, articles, and the physical legacy of long-ago events.

The week after, Copeland returns to lead Walking Tour: History of Arthur Manor and How It Sparked Scarsdale's Suburban Transformation (Course 13398) on Thursday, June 19, 2025. Learn the history and see the evidence of the transformation of this Edgewood neighborhood from rural farms and estates into modern suburbia.

In July, classics teacher Julia Simonds will debut at SAS with an interdisciplinary four-part course on Ancient Greek and Roman Civilization (Course 13399). Beginning Thursday, July 17, 2025, class will delve into history and mythology, incorporating introductory lessons in both Greek and Latin. Weaving in an arts & crafts component, students will paint traditional vase scenes on pumpkins rather than urns. The experience culminates in a guided visit to the Greek and Roman galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to connect classroom learning with world-renowned artifacts. Class tuition covers all materials and museum entrance fee but students are required to provide their own transportation.
