President's Message

I hope you and your family had a great Memorial Day weekend. Avalon definitely came back to life for the holiday weekend, and the weather was perfect for the Memorial Day parade and ceremony at Veteran’s Circle. It is always such a mixed-emotion event, both remembering our fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives and simultaneously watching the young kids enjoying the parade (and our freedoms) in Avalon’s version of small town America. It was a bit cold and windy at times for the beach, but unofficial summer has arrived.

We have not yet reached seating capacity for our free June Jam social on Saturday night, June 7. If you and your family or friends would like to attend, please read the article below and register at our website page. I will confirm your ticket request later this week once we close out the registration process. If you have already registered and wish to bring more guests, please email us at AHLOAExec@GMail.com and specify your full name and how many total tickets you would like to reserve. Further details concerning the evening are listed below.

By the time you are reading this, Spring into Summer will have already started with the Arts and Music weekend. Coming this weekend is the Garden Club’s annual Flower Show and AHLOA’s June Jam on Saturday June 7. The following weekend, on Saturday June 14, AHLOA is co-sponsoring another event – our traditional Community Connections re-born as a joint event with the Lions Pancake Breakfast fund-raiser. More info can be found in a separate article below. For all Spring into Summer details, visit the special Avalon Chamber of Commerce & 7 Mile Business Community Association website page here. Support the Avalon community and enjoy as many events throughout this month as your time in Avalon permits.

We have launched the special AHLOA Planning Committee which I highlighted in past issues of this monthly newsletter. I am delighted with the experience of those who volunteered from the AHLOA board and our general membership. The group is beginning to mobilize and start with an examination of the Borough’s long-range Master Plan which will come up for renewal in 2027. Our team of volunteers brings years of practical experience in community and municipality planning roles, and will be merging their experience along with input from Avalon Borough officials and your feedback to upcoming surveys in order to consider Avalon’s community needs for the next 10+ years. Much more will be coming your way regarding this initiative as the Committee gets into full swing. AHLOA member surveys will be forthcoming this fall.

On the topic of volunteers, I am pleased to announce that the AHLOA Nominating Committee has presented our recommendations for nominees to the AHLOA Board to be seated starting September 1, the beginning of our next fiscal year. The current Board unanimously approved all nominees at our May meeting. I will be releasing the list of nominees and the full AHLOA Board in the July monthly newsletter that goes out to all of you in addition to the AHLOA members who only request printed and mailed quarterly newsletters. So look for the full slate of Board members in the July issue, and please consider joining us for our annual members meeting on Saturday, August 9 when among other agenda items, you can vote to approve our upcoming Board. Many thanks to the Nominating Committee and the candidate board members for volunteering their time and talents!

All of us on the AHLOA Board hope to see you in Avalon throughout the month at many Spring into Summer events. Kick-start the summer and enjoy Avalon in June!

Sincerely,

Tony Newshel

President

North End Beach Replenishment

Moving sand by trucks from the mid-Avalon beaches to eroded North End beaches will begin this month from 10 PM- 8 AM Monday through Friday. All equipment used for this overnight project will be off the beaches by 8 AM.

Beach paths at 14th and 15th streets are restored and reopened while those at 10th and 11th streets will remain closed until the project is completed.

Bay Park Marina Update

Work on the Bay Park Marina rehabilitation project will be suspended as planned later this month through Labor Day. Among the many construction improvements, the new boat ramp is open.

Shortly, work on the piers at 53rd and 57th streets and the new dockmaster building will be completed. A gazebo, sidewalk and benches will be installed.

Spring into Summer Footnote

Spring into Summer is a shared marketing and event initiative supported in part by a grant from the NJ Department of State, Division of Travel and Tourism to 7MBCA. It combines existing community events with new offerings to create a range of activities to draw homeowners and visitors to Avalon in June to grow shoulder season engagement across business and community services. Using the grant and other community-supported funding, these events will be marketed via a central focus through multiple channels.

Spring into Summer 2025 will be structured as four themed weekends, starting Friday, May 30, each with anchor events, as well as other weekend and weekday activities for a variety of ages. Events will be supported by a range of community organizations, including the Chamber, 7MBCA, Borough of Avalon, Library & History Center, AHLOA, Avalon Environmental Commission, Avalon Garden Club, and more.

Visit the official website here for complete details about each event.
