The Anne Boykin Institute is excited to host its annual Summer Academy from Wednesday, June 4 through Friday, June 6, at the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing’s Boca Raton campus, as well as online. The event is expected to attract an international group of nurses and health care professionals who are dedicated to advancing the field of caring science.
This year’s theme, Caring: Essential Knowledge for Nursing Practice, aims to inspire reflections on the critical importance of developing knowledge in caring science that informs and guides nursing practice in all areas. | | Women Veterans Recognition Day | Join the celebration and recognition of women veterans and their service on Thursday, June 12, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Delray Genesis Club at Florida Atlantic's Flagler Credit Union Stadium (formerly FAU Stadium). This event is presented by Veterans & Homefront Voices and Vets & Allies Storytelling, the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, Florida Atlantic University Athletics, Canines Providing Assistance to Wounded Warriors (C-P.A.W.W. ™) and Florida Atlantic's Military and Veterans Student Success Center. The deadline for applications for the Accelerated BSN track at the College of Nursing’s Davie campus for fall 2025 admission has been extended to Tuesday, July 1. This track is specifically designed for the student with a baccalaureate degree or higher in another field who wants to become a Registered Nurse. The Florida Atlantic University Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing's Advisory Board recently voted to approve Barry D. Siegel, Esq., as its newest member. Siegel, of Boca Raton, is the founder and CEO of The Siegel Law Group, P.A. Learn more about Siegel and his hopes for the college in the Q&A below.
What inspired you to join the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing as an advisory board member?
I have long admired the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing’s commitment to excellence in patient-centered care and compassionate service. As someone who values education, health care access and the impact of strong leadership, I saw this as a meaningful opportunity to contribute to a program that’s shaping the future of nursing. I’m honored to support an institution that not only produces outstanding clinicians, but also leaders who are changing the face of health care.
How do you plan to support the college’s nursing education program?
I hope to bring a fresh perspective from my professional background, providing insights on strategic growth, collaboration and innovation. My goal is to support initiatives that strengthen community partnerships, create pathways for student success and further elevate the college’s visibility and impact. Whether through mentorship, advocacy or helping align resources with long-term goals, I look forward to playing a supportive and engaged role.
What do you admire most about our students?
What stands out to me is the students' resilience, compassion and deep sense of purpose. Nursing is both a science and a calling, and Florida Atlantic’s students embody that balance beautifully. Their dedication to learning, their empathy for others and their drive to make a difference inspire me and give me great hope for the future of health care.
What is your hope for the future of the college?
My hope is that the college continues to lead with heart and innovation—expanding its influence, increasing access to quality nursing education and continuing to be a national model for excellence. I also hope to see even more interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement that equips graduates to thrive in evolving health care environments.
Could you share some of your professional and personal interests?
Professionally, I am passionate about making a positive difference and impact in people’s lives whether it be through the professional efforts of my law firm, helping people with trust and estates and elder law, or contributing to organizations that serve others with integrity and impact. Personally, I love to travel, spend time with family and volunteer for causes for which I have a passion. I’m a lifelong learner and find great joy in connecting with others who are driven to grow and serve.

Congratulations to Lauren Cruz and Nicolas Bukley! Both Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing students were nominated for HCA Florida Aventura Hospital’s prestigious Flower Bud Award during their clinical experience at the hospital. To be nominated, students must have demonstrated compassion, empathy and professionalism during their clinical rotations, as well as a steadfast commitment to excellence in nursing.

The college hosted a welcome reception for 29 incoming DNP students on May 7 on its Boca Raton campus. Students learned about key aspects of the program, student resources, program expectations, campus information and community centers. The event also helped them connect with faculty, staff and fellow students. The incoming class officially began the DNP program in May.

An RN to BSN virtual information session will be held on Thursday, June 19, at 2 p.m. This track is for applicants who have completed a diploma or associate's degree nursing program at an ACEN-accredited institution, possess an unencumbered RN license in the state of residence and seek to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. | | Student Spotlight: Reede Walke | | |
Learn how Reede Walke, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and two-time graduate of Florida Atlantic, first found his inspiration to pursue nursing while serving in the infantry during combat deployments. Today, he works as a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
"I chose psychology as my specialty because I've always been fascinated by human behavior and how we think," Walke said. "With my military background, I saw firsthand the mental health challenges many veterans face, along with the barriers to accessing proper care. That’s what led me to pursue nursing in this field."
Walke is on track to receive a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree in December 2025 from Florida Atlantic University’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing. Read More
| | Alumna Spotlight: Gabrielle Mitchell, '18 | | |
Gabrielle Mitchell, a Florida Atlantic University Bachelor of Science in Nursing Class of 2018 graduate, was named the recipient of the Medical Staff Nursing Award for trauma nursing care at North Broward Medical Center in May.
“This award serves as a reminder that someone is always watching,” shared Mitchell. “I’m honored to be nominated by Dr. Richard Foltz for the Medical Executive Committee Nursing Recognition Award. Nursing is my passion. I’m here doing God’s work. For others to notice and appreciate my efforts ignites a flame within me to keep doing what I’m doing.”

College of Nursing faculty and students from the DNP, RN-BSN and Accelerated BSN programs offered health screenings and consultations at the Community Care Health and Wellness Expo on May 17 at the U.B. Kinsey Educational and Community Center. The college’s three stations focused on health checks for blood pressure/vision, mental health and diabetes. Palm Beach County Commissioner Bobby Powell Jr. attended the event.

| | Dr. Candy Wilson Attends Joint United States, Israeli Medical Conference | | |
U.S. Air Force Colonel (retired) Candy Wilson, Ph.D., and associate dean for research and scholarship, College of Nursing, attended a joint medical conference in Tel Aviv, Israel, between the medical corps of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and the United States military in April 2025. The session aimed to foster mutual learning, share knowledge and explore opportunities for collaborative research. The event brought together military health care professionals, public health experts and infectious disease specialists from both countries.
Dr. Wilson shared her experiences of a 19-year program of research, where she focused on the research outcomes of the health of women in the military. The sessions facilitated a productive exchange of experiences and insights, highlighting similarities and differences in approach. Ideas for joint research projects were discussed and emphasized improving readiness, force health protection and resilience through evidence-based practices. The conference underscored the importance of continued collaboration between allied military health systems to address shared challenges and promote service members' health and operational effectiveness.

Jillian Baker joined the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing as its new director of development on May 19. She moved to South Florida from her hometown of Reno, NV, where she was a director of development at her undergraduate alma mater, the University of Nevada, Reno. While she primarily fundraised for the Orvis School of Nursing, Baker also worked with the School of Public Health, School of Social Work and College of Liberal Arts.

The college's IT team welcomed Snyder Dieurestil in May as a system admin. He holds a M.S. degree in cybersecurity from Florida International University and a bachelor's degree from Broward College. With over a decade of experience in the IT sector, he has consistently demonstrated a strong ability to address complex technical challenges, and he is dedicated to continuously learning and innovating in the field of cybersecurity.

Katherine Haggar has a Ph.D. from Florida Atlantic in comparative studies. She recently completed her postdoctoral fellowship as study director for the Network Analysis of Family Caregiving for People Living with Dementia study in the University’s sociology department. This led to her new role as a community health care worker at the Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center, where she helps caregivers of those living with dementia.

Dr. Armiel Suriaga served as the keynote speaker at the 2025 Nursing Annual Research Summit (NARS) held in the Philippines. He delivered his address via a live virtual platform at the West Visayas State University Cultural Center on May 31. His keynote focused on empowering research champions through mentorship, collaboration and a commitment to research excellence.

Dr. Candy Wilson, retired U.S. Air Force Colonel and associate dean for nursing research and scholarship at Florida Atlantic University’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, reflected on her 30-year miliary career in advance of Women Veterans Recognition Day, which is observed on June 12.
