LWVCDC Annual Meeting Marple Library - June 11

Our 2025 LWVCDC Annual Meeting is Wednesday, June 11 from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM at the Marple Library 2599 Sproul Road, Broomall, PA 19008. This is a FREE Member ONLY event. The purpose of the Annual Meeting is to conduct the important business of our League of Women Voters and to celebrate our mission to Empower Voters and Defend Democracy.

We especially hope to see many of the 20 new members we have added since the beginning of the year. This is one of only two in-person meetings we have during the year.

During the business portion of our meeting we will be electing the 2025-2026 Board of Directors, adopting our 2025-2026 Budget and Local Program plus sharing reports from our committees about our volunteer efforts throughout our communities.

The League will present its annual Outstanding Community Service Award to Rosemarie Halt for her dedication to the work of establishing a public health department in Delaware County.

We will email a digital version of the 2025 Annual Meeting Booklet prior to the meeting to all those that register. Food will be provided at no cost but donations at the door will be appreciated.

Special Note from the Development Committee: They'll have Boscov's Friends Helping Friends coupons for sale day, Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the annual meeting. Plan to buy a few for your own friends and family or to sell at your church or synagogue. They are $5 each, all of which goes to LWVCDC, and a great deal for holiday or back-to-school shoppers—25% off everything in the store. It's never too early to help raise money for LWVCDC!

Our Oath to Democracy from the National League of Women Voters!

“The mission of the League of Women Voters is to Empower Voters and Defend our Democracy;” For over a century, the heart and soul of our work has been centering voters' voices in democracy. We’ve participated in many of our nation’s most pivotal voting rights battles, from women’s suffrage to the Equal Rights Amendment to the passage of the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) and the Help America Vote Act (HAVA). As democracy turns another corner, we are strengthening our campaign: Women Defend Democracy

“We will faithfully execute our civic responsibility as nonpartisan advocates;"

LWV is proudly a nonpartisan organization. And we’re focused on issues that matter to communities. We believe in a strong democracy by and for all people. We stand for the rights and representation of all voters, no matter their political party—not to mention their race, gender, primary language, and more.

We Take Action: Call Our U.S. Senators and Tell Them to Kill the Big, Beautiful Bill

The horrific Fiscal 2026 tax and spending bill that passed the House by one vote is now in the U.S. Senate where they will act on it in the next 30 days.

The bill cuts Medicaid, likely causing the closing of many hospitals and nursing homes that largely depend on Medicaid and throwing 8.6 million Americans off Medicaid, leaving them without any health insurance at all.

It also cuts Medicare and will raise taxes on the middle class and poor, while extending tax cuts for the top .o1 percent and corporations. It adds $3.8 trillion to the national debt and it neuters the courts from enforcing injunctions against executive orders.

Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (D., Delaware County) says the only thing that works in the moment is public pressure. Let's prove her right.

Call and write our U.S. senators, John Fetterman (Phone: (202) 224-4254) and Dave McCormick (202-224-6324) and ask them to vote against it.

Early Voting Badly Needed in PA

As we enter another critical election season, one that draws far less attention than presidential elections but is no less important, Pennsylvanians deserve a voting system that reflects the realities of modern life.

The League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania — founded on the belief that democracy works best when every voice is heard — calls on state lawmakers to adopt true early in-person voting.

While we have made progress with no-excuse mail voting, Pennsylvania continues to lag behind the majority of states by failing to offer voters accessible and flexible in-person voting options ahead of Election Day.

... And Write: Jodine Mayberry's Guest Column on the SAVE Act in the Delaware County Times

The SAVE Act Doesn't Save Anything

The SAVE Act – Safeguard American Voter Eligibility – is one of those ideas that sounds good – but is really terrible.

The bill passed the U.S. House April 10 by a vote of 220 to 208 on a largely party-line vote. It is now in the Senate where it needs 60 votes to pass.

SAVE’s stated intention is to prevent noncitizens from voting in federal elections, a thing that very, very rarely happens and has never changed the outcome of a single election in modern times.

We Report: LWVUS Report on Our Nationwide Impact on the 2024 Election

Read the report HERE. Our own League, LWVCDC, has a very strong, active voter information and services committee that tabled at or made voter education presentations to more than 40 nursing homes, high schools, libraries and environmental events in 2024. LWVCDC's contribution to this report was huge. And it wasn't just committee members either. Many of our members volunteered at these events. Thank you to all.
