Albemarle County Farmers Impacted by Frost and Freeze – Federal Disaster Assistance Available
A late spring frost caused significant crop losses across Virginia, leading to a USDA Secretarial Disaster Declaration that includes Albemarle County. Many producers sustained severe damage after warm weather prompted early budding, followed by several freeze events in March and April. The declaration makes USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) emergency loans, credit options, and future relief programs available to help farmers manage costs during a season with limited or no harvest.
Farmers have eight months from June 26, 2026, to apply for FSA emergency loans. Assistance can help cover expenses for crops that will not generate income this year.

Ivy Solid Waste & Recycling Center (ISWRC): A New, FREE Lithium Battery Disposal Program is Now Available
Residents now have a safe, convenient, and free way to dispose of lithium batteries through a new program at the Ivy Solid Waste & Recycling Center. The initiative complements Rivanna Solid Waste Authority's (RSWA) existing free disposal programs for paint, motor oil, and antifreeze.
The program is available to residents of Albemarle County, the City of Charlottesville, and the Town of Scottsville. Commercial entities and businesses are not eligible to participate at this time.
If possible, lithium batteries should be removed from the devices they power before being dropped off. If the battery cannot be easily removed, the entire device may be accepted as long as it fits inside a standard 5-gallon bucket.
Lithium batteries can be dropped off at the Ivy Solid Waste & Recycling Center, located at 4576 Dick Woods Road in Charlottesville. The battery collection shed is located in the Convenience Center area alongside the public recycling bins. Simply place batteries in the designated collection bucket outside the building.

Albemarle County Fire Rescue (ACFR): Fireworks Safety Reminder
As a reminder, while fireworks are a beloved tradition, consumer use can be extremely dangerous and results in thousands of injuries each year. We encourage everyone to prioritize safety by enjoying a professionally produced show, like the C'ville Spectacular, or consider options other than fireworks.
If you do opt for at-home fireworks, please remember:
- Only use legal fireworks.
- Always have adult supervision.
- Never aim fireworks at another person or structure.
- Have a water source handy.
- Never attempt to re-light a firework.
- Use only one firework at a time and keep your distance from others after you light it.
⭐Here are a few ideas to get into the patriotic spirit without fireworks:
- Use glow sticks, which glow in the dark and are a safe alternative to sparklers.
- Outdoor movie night with a screen and projector.
- Red, white, and blue silly string.
- Throw a birthday party for the USA - with cake!
⚠️Special Note on Dry Weather Conditions: During dry weather, the risk of fire increases significantly. Please consider attending professional fireworks displays instead of using fireworks at home. An apparatus and a fire marshal from ACFR will be on-site at each professional fireworks show in Albemarle County. If you choose to use fireworks, take extra precautions to avoid igniting dry grass or foliage. Your vigilance can help prevent wildfires and protect our community.

Starting July 1 - Styrofoam Regulation for Food Vendors: State Law Implementation Details
Starting July 1, 2026, Virginia's ban on Expanded Polystyrene (Styrofoam) takes effect. This is a step forward for environmental health by reducing materials that persist for centuries, contribute to litter, and break down into microplastics that harm wildlife and ecosystems. Many food vendors are already transitioning to alternatives such as paper-based containers, molded fiber trays, and certified compostable packaging.
Albemarle County is accepting applications for a one-year, renewable exemption for vendors who can demonstrate that no reasonable alternative exists and that compliance would cause significant economic hardship. Applications can be submitted online on our website.

Real Estate Property Assessments Underway in Albemarle County
Albemarle County is committed to enhancing the quality of residential real estate data to improve assessment accuracy. Each year, as part of the routine assessment process, we review approximately 20% of properties, totaling around 8,000. While most properties are now reviewed using aerial photography, the County still conducts site visits when the photography does not provide adequate information. Please note: all inspections are of the exterior of the buildings on the property, except where necessary for permit work.
Staff completing the assessments will have County identification and will drive vehicles marked with the Albemarle County seal. The appraisers will knock on doors to let residents know they are there and, in some cases, may ask specific questions about the basement finish or other general details as needed.
If no one answers the door, the appraiser will place a door hanger on the home's doorknob with the date and time of the visit, and then proceed with the exterior inspection. If the appraiser sees a “no trespassing sign” and no one answers the door to provide permission, or if permission is not granted, they will not continue with an inspection.

Albemarle County Police Department (ACPD): Lock It or Lose It -July is Vehicle Theft Prevention Month
The Albemarle County Police Department encourages everyone to take a few simple steps to help prevent vehicle-related theft. Leaving items like phones, wallets, laptops, and even mail in your vehicle—especially in plain sight—can make you a target for theft. It also increases your risk of identity theft.
To stay safe, always lock your vehicle, remove all valuables (especially firearms), and never leave your keys inside. Taking just a moment to secure your car can prevent serious consequences and keep our community safer.

Upcoming Office Closure
Friday, July 3 - Albemarle County offices will be closed in observance of Independence Day. Important reminder: Early in-person voting will not be available on Friday, July 3, in observance of the Independence Day holiday. Offices will reopen Monday, July 6, 2026, on a regular schedule. Public safety, including Fire Rescue and Police Services, will operate as usual.

Albemarle County Police Department (ACPD) - Welcomes New Officers
The Albemarle County Police Department welcomed two new officers to the department last month following their graduation from the Central Shenandoah Criminal Justice Training Academy's 154th Basic Law Enforcement Class.
The new officers are:
> Captain Michael Talbert
> Torrence Yarborough
Captain Talbert will be overseeing the Criminal Investigations Division, and Officer Yarborough will be starting his career in the Patrol Division. These recruits have shown incredible dedication and talent and will make a positive impact in our community.

Albemarle County Fire Rescue (ACFR) - Recruit Graduation
Albemarle County Fire Rescue is proud to introduce its newest class of firefighters—Recruit School 26 (RS26)—as they completed 26 weeks of intensive training and officially joined the department.
RS26 consists of 16 recruits who began their journey in January 2026. Throughout the program, they completed two rigorous training phases focused on EMS and Fire, gaining essential skills in emergency medical services, firefighter survival, emergency vehicle operations, car seat installation, and more.
To celebrate their accomplishments, ACFR hosted a graduation and pinning ceremony on June 25, 2026. This event marked the recruits' transition from trainees to full members of the ACFR team.

Elections - August 4 Primary Election: Early Voting is Happening Now Through August 1*
The 2026 primary election for both parties will be held on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, to nominate candidates for the offices of United States Senate and United States House of Representatives. Register to vote or update your registration by 5 pm, Friday, July 24, 2026. Be sure to check your voter status! There are three different ways to cast your vote:
- Early in-person
- Vote by mail (absentee)
- In-person at your polling place on Election Day
Early in-person voting began Thursday, June 18, and runs through August 1, 2026.* Any voter registered in Albemarle County may vote early in-person at the County Office Building on 5th Street in Conference Room A. There will be directional signage and volunteers to guide voters to early voting parking locations.

To vote by mail, download and complete your absentee ballot application today. You must submit your absentee ballot application by July 24. If you miss the July 24 deadline, you can use Same Day Registration to cast a provisional ballot in person if you are eligible to register to vote. The 2026 Swim Season has Begun!
If you're ready to have fun, catch some rays, and enjoy a splash-filled summer all wrapped in one, our swimming beaches are the place to be! 🏊♂️☀️ Summer swim season is happening now at Chris Greene Lake Park, Walnut Creek Park, and Mint Springs Valley Park.
Our swimming lakes are open 7 days a week, from 10 am to 6 pm, during summer operating hours through August 9. After August 9, we will transition back to weekends only at Chris Greene Lake until Labor Day, September 7.
We’re excited to announce that we now accept credit card payments 💳 in addition to cash and checks! Making payments is easier and more convenient than ever.
Fees for Albemarle County residents are $3 for adults, $2 for children (ages 4-12), and free for swimmers under 4 and over 62. Fees for non-Albemarle County residents are $5 for adults, $3 for children (ages 4-12), and free for swimmers under 4.
⛱️☀️ We also offer kayak, canoe 🛶, and 🏄🏽♀️ paddleboard rentals at Walnut Creek Park and Chris Greene Lake for $15 per hour. Did you know we also have season passes for Summer Swim? Passes are available for purchase in person at the lake entrance booth upon arrival, and starting July 1, all season passes will be half-price! Registration is Still Available for Albemarle County Parks and Recreation (ACPR) Summer Camp
Parks and Recreation still has spots available for our Adventure Camp at four locations: Brownsville, Stone Robinson, Woodbrook Elementary Schools, and Walton Middle School.
Adventure Camp: ACPR will also have an Adventure Camp this summer at four locations. This program is for children ages 6 to 13 and will focus on outdoor adventures, offering campers opportunities to explore nature, develop skills, and build confidence through recreational activities. We will use the school facilities, school outdoor space, and field trips to Greenwood Community Center, Maymont Park, and Albemarle County and City Parks. Dates for Adventure Camp are from July 6-10, 2026, from 8 am to 5:30 pm. The cost of camp is a one-time fee ($185) per child. Guests joined us on June 20 for remarks, morning pickleball activities, and a look at the expanded facility—now offering twelve dedicated public courts thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Albemarle County Parks Foundation, Central Virginia Pickleball, local partners, and generous community support. Congratulations to the Piedmont Pitch Winners!
The 2nd annual Piedmont Ascent Business Conference at Piedmont Virginia Community College wrapped up on June 3 with an exciting finale: the live Piedmont Pitch competition. Six area entrepreneurs took the stage to share their vision, their ingenuity, and their plans for growth with a full audience and a panel of expert judges.
This year’s competition awarded $15,000 in prizes, co‑sponsored by Albemarle County and the City of Charlottesville’s Offices of Economic Development—funding designed to help local founders take their next big step.
After an evening of standout presentations, two ventures rose to the top:
- Control Alt Recycle — an electronics recycling and data‑destruction business dedicated to secure, sustainable tech disposal.
- Penny’s Imperfect Pizza — a sourdough‑based pizza venture celebrating home‑grown and locally sourced ingredients, proving that great flavor doesn’t require perfection.
A huge thank‑you goes to the Central Virginia Small Business Development Center (CVSBDC) and Community Investment Collaborative (CIC) for providing expert training, mentorship, and support throughout the program. Their guidance helped each finalist sharpen their pitch and strengthen their business model.
We’re incredibly proud of all six finalists. Their creativity and determination continue to energize our region’s entrepreneurial community, and we can’t wait to see what they do next.

Our community partners at the Community Investment Collaborative (CIC) have a 16-week Entrepreneur Workshop created with you in mind!
Each Tuesday, beginning in August, you'll have the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and learn from experienced professionals in the area.

Based in Charlottesville and serving Central and Southern Virginia, its 16-week Entrepreneur Workshop has over 750 graduates, and more than 275 entrepreneurs have acquired over $6.5 million through CIC’s microloan program.

Reminder: Solarize Virginia
For a limited time each year, residents and businesses within the Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC’s) nine-county service area can take advantage of competitive rates and financing mechanisms designed specifically for solar energy systems.
If you’ve been thinking about installing solar panels on your home, farm, or business, this is a great opportunity to learn more. This campaign is a cooperative program with PEC, the Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP), and participating municipal governments. The 2026 Solarize campaign runs until July 15. Check out their educational social media 60 Seconds to Solar series for a quick overview of how Solarize Virginia works.
