News For You

JUNE 2026

A Message from the President:

Dear Members and Friends,

As we welcome the arrival of June, we enter a season of vibrant energy, warmer days, and a collective shift toward reflection and renewal. June is a powerful time of transition, perhaps felt most deeply by the young people in our community who are marking major life milestones.

First and foremost, I want to extend our heartfelt congratulations to all of our high school and college graduates! Reaching this milestone is no small feat. It represents years of late nights, discipline, and a commitment to personal growth. To our graduates: your community is immensely proud of you, and we cannot wait to see how you use your talents to shape the world.

This celebration reminds us of the profound importance of education. Education is more than a pathway to professional success; it is a tool of empowerment, a catalyst for critical thinking, and a shield against ignorance. It broadens our horizons and equips us with the knowledge needed to challenge injustice and build a more equitable society.

Our commitment to education extends beyond the classroom and into the civic life of our community. On Thursday, June 18, the Fairfax County NAACP will host a Community Conversation with FCPS Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid. This important forum will provide an opportunity for community members to engage directly with school leadership, ask questions, and share perspectives on the future of public education in Fairfax County. Additional information about the event can be found below.

In fact, our dedication to learning connects directly to the historical significance of this month as we observe Juneteenth. Marking the day in 1865 when the delayed news of freedom finally reached the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, Juneteenth is a stark reminder of the enduring fight for human dignity.

As we honor this important chapter in our nation's history, I invite you to join us for the Fairfax County NAACP's Juneteenth celebration on Saturday, June 13. This event provides an opportunity for fellowship, reflection, and community as we commemorate the resilience, achievements, and contributions of African Americans. Additional information about the event can be found below.

The observance of Juneteenth also reminds us that the fight for freedom and the fight for education have always been intertwined. Our ancestors understood that knowledge is a cornerstone of liberation, which is why they risked so much to learn, to teach, and to build schools against all odds. As we remember our ancestors and honor their resilience, sacrifice, and unyielding spirit, we recognize that pursuing education is one of the most powerful ways we can carry their torch forward.

As we move through this month of celebration and reflection, we also recognize Father’s Day and honor the fathers, grandfathers, mentors, and father figures who help shape our families and communities. Their guidance, wisdom, sacrifice, and leadership leave a lasting impact on future generations, and we thank them for the many ways they nurture and support those in their care. Whether through their presence, encouragement, example, or steadfast commitment to their loved ones, these men help instill the values, confidence, and resilience that strengthen both families and communities. We celebrate their contributions and acknowledge the important role they play in helping the next generation thrive.

This June, as we celebrate the achievements of our graduates, honor the fathers and mentors who help shape our community, reflect on the legacy and significance of Juneteenth, and engage in important conversations about the future of education, let us recommit to the work that still lies ahead. I encourage each of you to find time this month to celebrate our graduates, reflect on our shared history, and find joy in the community we are continuously building together.

Thank you for your ongoing dedication, your passion, and your unwavering commitment to our collective future.

In Solidarity,

Niki Zimmerman

President, Fairfax County NAACP

Commemorating Juneteenth

Juneteenth always invites us to pause and remember that freedom was not simply given—it was delayed, demanded, and finally declared. It marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas, were told they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

But beyond the history, Juneteenth carries something deeper for us as a community. It is a living reminder of endurance. Of families who kept going without certainty. Of ancestors who held onto hope when the world gave them little reason to. And of the strength that still runs through us today because of their perseverance.

As we celebrate, we also honor the beauty of Black culture, the richness of our traditions, and the progress that has been hard-won across generations. Juneteenth is both a celebration and a reflection—an invitation to gather, to remember, and to recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of justice and equality.

May this day remind us that freedom is both a milestone and a responsibility, and that each generation is called to carry the story forward with courage and care.

Member Spotlight

Welcome to our Member Spotlight! Each month, we’ll be shining a light on one of our amazing members who embodies the spirit of our community.

Member Spotlight: Mary Paden

We are proud to spotlight our very own Fair and Affordable Housing Committee Chair, Mary Paden, who was recently honored with the 2026 Community Champion Award by the Mount Vernon District in recognition of more than two decades of advocacy for affordable housing and social equity in Fairfax County.

The award was presented on May 7 by Volunteer Fairfax at the James Lee Community Center, where Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chair Jeff McKay and district supervisors recognized ten outstanding community leaders. In presenting the award, Mount Vernon District Supervisor Dan Storck described Paden as “a tireless community leader known for her unwavering commitment to ensuring that all residents, especially those most vulnerable, are heard, supported, and included in decisions that shape their lives.”

Through her leadership as Chair of the Fairfax NAACP Housing Committee, as the NAACP’s representative on the County’s Affordable Housing Advisory Council, and as a member of the County’s Manufactured Housing Roundtable, Paden has helped advance meaningful change throughout Fairfax County. The award citation details the breadth of her advocacy and organizing efforts, including the approval of the Penn Daw Fire Station and Emergency and Supportive Housing project and stronger protections for more than 1,200 manufactured home park families along Richmond Highway. The full citation offers a deeper look at the lasting impact of her work on housing stability and equity throughout Fairfax County.

“Mary Paden has been a community advocate for as long as I’ve known her—for over two decades,” Storck said during the ceremony. “She always takes up the battle for the underprivileged or the person who cannot defend themselves. Her tireless dedication to affordable housing, social equity, and accessibility has left a lasting impact on the Mount Vernon District and all of Fairfax County.”

Since joining the Fairfax NAACP in 2016, Paden immediately established the Branch’s first Housing Committee. Under her leadership, the committee has advocated for increased affordable housing funding, supported affordable housing developments facing organized opposition, and championed greater protections for unsheltered residents, particularly during periods of extreme heat.

Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Paden holds a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Detroit and a master’s degree in Natural Resources Conservation from the University of Michigan. Her professional career has included work as a journalist, editor, publications manager, and charter sailboat crew member. Since moving to Fairfax County in 1982, she has become a respected voice on community issues and has written extensively for local newspapers to help inform and engage residents.

Mary’s dedication embodies the mission of the Fairfax County NAACP and demonstrates the power of committed advocacy to improve lives and strengthen communities. We congratulate her on this well-deserved recognition and thank her for her years of service and leadership.

Event Highlights Recap

May Event Highlights

In May, the Fairfax County NAACP continued its mission of advocacy, education, and community engagement through meaningful partnerships, member recognition, and programs that highlighted both our history and our collective responsibility to serve.

On May 17, the Fairfax County NAACP was honored to receive the Fairfax County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated’s Program Planning & Development Award in recognition of the branch’s ongoing commitment to service, impact, and advocacy to the Fairfax County community. This meaningful honor reflects the collective efforts of our members, volunteers, and community partners who work tirelessly to advance civil rights, promote equity, and strengthen the communities we serve.

On May 18, the Fairfax County NAACP partnered with George Mason University for the Just-In-Time Hiring Fair, helping connect job seekers with employment opportunities and valuable career resources. This partnership reflects our continued commitment to advancing economic opportunity and workforce development throughout our community.

At our May 26 General Membership Meeting, we proudly recognized Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Alpha Beta Alpha Omega Chapter as the winner of our Third Annual BGLO Legacy Membership Challenge. We were honored to hear from Chapter President Lynbea Toombs, who shared information about the chapter’s Childhood Hunger Initiative Power Pack (CHIPP) program. Through this impactful initiative, the chapter works to combat childhood hunger by providing nutritious food packs to students facing food insecurity. Her presentation shed light on the realities many families in South Fairfax County continue to face and underscored the importance of collaboration, service, and community action in addressing these challenges.

Members also had the opportunity to learn more about an important chapter in Civil Rights history through a presentation by Branch Secretary Michael O’Brien on his award-winning book, The Tougaloo Nine: The Jackson Library Sit-In at the Crossroads of Civil War and Civil Rights. His remarks highlighted the courage of the Tougaloo Nine and the lasting impact of their efforts to challenge segregation and advance equal access to public institutions.

As preparations continued for our annual Juneteenth observance, volunteers gathered on May 30 for a community clean-up at the historic Harris Family Cemetery at Bull Run Regional Park. Their efforts helped preserve and honor this important site ahead of the Fifth Annual Bull Run Juneteenth Commemoration. We extend our sincere appreciation to everyone who donated their time and energy to support this effort.

May’s activities reflected the power of partnership, service, and education in advancing our mission. From supporting workforce development and addressing community needs to preserving history and preparing for Juneteenth, the Fairfax County NAACP remains committed to creating opportunities, fostering understanding, and building a stronger future for all.
