Worship Series

Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian; he led his flock beyond the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of a bush; he looked, and the bush was blazing, yet it was not consumed.

Exodus 3:1-2

Wilderness is a time or place where people encounter what is new, strange, scary, lonely, unknown, or mysterious. The wilderness is a wild and beautiful time and place where we can discover the sacred within each person and all of creation. The wilderness can inspire us and guide us, assuring us of God’s constant presence. The wilderness awaits us all, and God meets us there.

Pastor's Ponderings

“Clean up! Clean up, everybody, everywhere. Clean up! Clean up,

everybody, do your share.”

- Children’s song

This past Sunday we finished our series, "Imagine the People of God." At

the heart of the series was a simple conviction: the Spirit of God is a playful

Spirit — one who creates necessary disruption so that we can see the world

in a new way, and who invites us into the connection, creativity, dreaming,

and compassion that playfulness makes possible.

After the service, Sherry Johnson caught me and suggested that the perfect

way to end worship would have been to sing the clean-up song and have

everyone clean up together. She was right. It was genius — and, in

hindsight, an almost embarrassingly obvious thing we overlooked in our

planning.

But Sherry's instinct points to something important: cleanup is not the end

of play. It is part of it.

In the book I referenced throughout this series — Play: How It Shapes the

Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul — Dr. Stuart Brown

writes:

Part of the license to play freely comes from being in an

environment that is structured enough to provide a feeling of

safety, so that the child is confident that nothing bad is going to

happen. Part of the freedom to alter the natural order of things

(“Let’s say this car can fly”; “Let’s throw all the Legos in a big

pile on the floor and see what we can make from them”) is the

knowledge that order will be restored again afterward.

Preschool kids may not want to stop playing and clean up, but if

every day at ten a.m. they are told in a nonjudgmental,

nonangry way that it’s time to clean up, and a game is made of

it, they will feel the emotional logic of reasonable boundaries,

and within this consistency find comfort.

(Dr. Stuart Brown, Play, pg. 97)

One of the things we try to teach children is that when we make a mess —

whether we meant to or not — we clean up after ourselves. Restoring order

is what makes the next round of play possible. It is what keeps the space

safe, creative, and free!

We would do well, as adults, to remember this.

And then there is the harder lesson. Anyone who has spent time around

children knows the response: "But I didn't do that." Or the classic: "Not me."

And sometimes that's true. But in a shared space, membership in the

community sometimes means cleaning up a mess you didn't make —

because the alternative is that no one gets to play.

Imagine children arriving in the morning to find their play area in disarray

— not because of anything they did, but because something happened after

they left. They cleaned up faithfully the day before. And yet, if they want a

space where they can be free, creative, and safe, they will have to be willing

to restore it together before the playing can begin.

This is not unfair. This is community.

In order for all of God's children to thrive — to live in the connection,

comfort, and safety that genuine flourishing requires — sometimes we will

have to help clean up messes we had no part in making. That is what it

means to be the people of God together.

Let's keep imagining it. And let's keep doing the work.

Shalom,

Pastor Owen

July Mission Focus: Supporting Ankeny Students

It is hard to believe that the start of a new school year is just around the corner. As students, teachers, and staff begin preparing for the months ahead, our July local mission focus will be supporting students in the Ankeny School District through a donation drive for the Hygiene Closet at Ankeny Centennial High School.

Many of us are fortunate to have easy access to everyday hygiene and household essentials. However, for some students and families, these necessities can be difficult to obtain. The Hygiene Closet helps ensure that students have access to items that support their health, well-being, and confidence both in and out of the classroom.

Ankeny Centennial High School is currently seeking donations of the following items, with deodorant being the most frequently requested need:

·        Deodorant

·        Liquid body soap

·        Toothbrushes and toothpaste

·        Shampoo and conditioner

·        Feminine hygiene products

·        Dish soap

·        Laundry detergent

·        Underwear

·        Socks

·        Facial tissues

·        Paper towels

·        Toilet paper

Donations will be collected at the church throughout the month of July. At the end of the month, members of the Mission Committee will deliver the collected items to the high school's Hygiene Closet.

We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with our local schools and support students in our community. Thank you for your generosity and willingness to make a difference in the lives of others.

If you have any questions, please contact a member of the Mission Committee.

Painting: we continue to paint around the property. Classrooms #2 and #3 have been completed. It really brightens up those rooms. I’d like to continue to do more painting as well. If you can’t paint, I need help taping, cleaning out rooms, lying down drop cloths and all those things that go with painting.

Please let me know.

Firepit: as you know we have added a firepit by the north garage (Eagle Scout Project). The pit has concrete around it as well as sidewalk leading from the parking lot to the pit for easyaccess. The rules are posted on the garage door, we’ve obtained some folding chairs (in the garage) and have a key code for easy access. Contact Sarah if you’d like to take advantage of our new addition to reserve. Remember, just like scouting organizations, leave the area better than when you arrived! Put away the chairs, lock the door to the garage, make sure the access key is secured appropriately. ENJOY!

Electrical work: Ongoing at ACC as most of the original building appliances (heaters in the bathrooms) are aging out.

Yardwork: including mowing, weeding, trimming bushes, trimming branches is an on-going effort.

Shoutout: Always enjoy working with Linda and Paul Lamont, Christine Stoffa, Gary Black, Glen Smith, Patrice and John Sayre, Colleen Porath, Rob Duffy, Matt Porath, Lucas Nitzel.

Love Lunches

Ankeny Love Lunches 2026 – Update

As the July ACC newsletter is being produced, we have completed two days of our first week of being the ‘lead church’ for Ankeny Love Lunches in Sunset Park for 2026. For both days we have had great weather, great volunteers and great attendance.

For those two days we averaged 119 people – which is 20% higher than a year ago. We’ll see how the rest of our week goes and how the entire summer goes. We’ll produce a report in the September ACC newsletter indicating how this summer compared

to the results from the summer of 2025. Our second week of being the ‘lead church’ will happen the week of July 27-31. The sign-up poster for that week will go up at church on Sunday, June 28. We need your help. If you have any questions about Ankeny Love Lunches, please contact Georgene or Steve Raver. Thank you.

Truevine Academy Foundation:

Growing Partnership, Growing Impact

Ankeny Christian Church is once again highlighting the work of the Truevine Academy Foundation during its July Missions emphasis. We are grateful for ACC’s continued prayers, encouragement, and support—support that is opening doors of opportunity for students in Umuahia, Nigeria. As many of you know Eleke Ukpabi, a member of our congregation is the Chairman of Truevine Foundation which he helped develop in memory of his father.

Rooted in the belief that education grounded in faith can transform lives, the Foundation partners with Truevine Schools & Academy to provide free or subsidized quality education for 235 students. Through this partnership, students are gaining the knowledge, skills, and spiritual grounding needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

Our Mission in Action

Truevine Academy Foundation advances educational and entrepreneurial opportunities that nurture academic excellence, spiritual growth, leadership, creativity, and service. Students benefit from a PK–12 STEAM+E curriculum (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics, and Entrepreneurship), equipping them with both practical and innovative skills.

Current Strategic Initiatives

  • Education Support Program – Scholarships, tutoring, and essential learning resources that expand access and improve student outcomes.
  • TechBridge Initiative – Increasing access to technology, digital tools, and training, with a long‑term goal of equipping 1,000 students with vital 21st century skills.
  • Entrepreneurial Development Workshops – Training youth and adults in business, vocational, and leadership skills that foster self‑sufficiency and economic opportunity.

Impact in Real Lives

One recent example is Victoria Samuel, a scholarship recipient who graduated at the top of her class. With support from the Foundation, she remained focused on her studies and is now exploring college opportunities—potentially becoming the first in her family to pursue higher education. Her dream is to become an educator and invest in future generations.

Victoria’s story reflects the broader impact of this ministry: students discovering new possibilities, families finding renewed hope, and young people developing the confidence and character to influence their communities for good.

Looking Ahead

Our vision remains clear—expand educational access, strengthen technology enabled learning, develop future leaders, and create pathways that empower young people academically, professionally, spiritually, and personally.

Thank you, ACC, for your faithful partnership. Your July Mission offerings are greatly appreciated. Together, we are nurturing God‑given potential and investing in lives that will shape generations.

Online General Assembly in July:

General Assembly – the large gathering of Disciples from all over the world– is changing format. In the past we have met in person every other year in

places around the United States. The in person event is now being held every three years. However, the intent is to have us connect with the larger

church more frequently. Enter the every year Assembly! In the years not meeting in person, the General Assembly will be held in virtual space. The 2026 General Assembly, “Beyond: Love Surpassing”, will be held online July 10-11.

“More than just a series of meetings, General Assembly is a covenantal

table set for education, discussion, worship, business, fellowship, and

action. Each congregation is invited to boldly claim their covenantal place

at the table by inviting everyone to attend online and by prayerfully

designating 3 delegates to vote at General Assembly. Meeting every year

online will allow more Disciples to connect more frequently and to work

together more fully “to be the church we say we are.” If you’ve never

attended General Assembly before, a special welcome is extended to you.”
