We have a new resource for our library patrons! I am pleased to announce the availability of Transparent Language Online for Libraries, a complete language-learning system with courses and lessons designed to build listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Transparent Language Online allows learners to explore a new language in the comfort of their own home, at the library, or on-the-go. Library cardholders will have unlimited access to more than 110 languages, including English for speakers of over 30 languages. Transparent Language Online for Libraries is packed with pronunciation practice, speech analysis, grammar, writing activities, and vocabulary-building activities. Director’s Bookshelf
This Story May Save Your Life by Tiffany Crum: I have a soft spot for this book because it is a debut novel, and the author included a note at the end about her journey to getting published. It was a long road but she eventually achieved her dream. A word of caution: do not read this book; you must listen to the book to get the full effect. I advise this because the story is about two best friends who have a hit podcast, which means there are quite a few podcast segments that always read better on audio. The plot seems rather typical on the surface: one friend goes missing and the other must unravel what happened. I found the story engaging and there were definitely a couple twists I didn't see coming and couple that I did. Overall I gave the mystery 4 stars.
Mr. Mercedes and Never Flinch by Stephen King: I checked out Never Flinch (published in 2025) on impulse and only after the download did I realize it was part of a series. Since the series follows a detective and every book is a new case, I went ahead and gave the book a go. As Stephen King goes, it was very tame and read much more like mystery rather than horror. Stephen King is a great writer and this story did not disappoint. The aging female detective Holly Gibney is clever, determined, and very likeable. What I really like about the book was that chunks of it are set in Iowa City and Davenport. I just found that to be so cool. Once I finished Never Flinch I wanted to start at the beginning. I learned that Holly Gibney is part of the Bill Hodges detective series by Stephen King, which starts with Mr. Mercedes (published in 2014). There are 3 Bill Hodges books and 4 Holly Gibney books. So I started from the beginning. Mr. Mercedes was traumatizing for me, and I look forward to forgetting the story. The plot and characters were good, but there was one particular plot point that was very upsetting for me as a parent. I am undecided if I will continue the series. Stephen King is like a box of chocolates and you never know what you're going to get.

Project Next Generation
Digital Art Classes for 5th-12th Grade
Mondays in June - Teens (Grades 9-12)
Tuesdays in June - Tweens (Grades 5-8)
Participants will learn from a certified art instructor how to create digital art using iPads. Apps include Tayasui Sketches, Sketchbook, Procreate, and Procreate Dreams.

Be sure to mark 6/6/26 on your calendar at Empire Park for the Kickoff of Summer Reading Program. How important to encourage the children to read during summer vacation - in fact, all of us!
Also, watch the library Facebook page and the Friend's Facebook page for our next place to catch a bite to eat and help the library in our fundraising efforts for our library outreach vehicle.
There are lots of fun things going on at the library this summer so be sure to register for these and join in the fun!
