While many college students spend summer break away from campus, a dedicated group of Western Nevada College student researchers devoted a month advancing biomedical science through paid research experiences as part of the IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) program.

Working alongside faculty mentors on WNC’s Fallon and Carson City campuses, students explored complex biological questions involving immune response, inflammation, viral defense mechanisms and molecular genetics while gaining hands-on laboratory experience that extends beyond the traditional classroom. They shared their research work during a poster presentation event on June 18 in the Aspen Building on the Carson City campus.



The INBRE program, funded through the National Institutes of Health, supports biomedical research opportunities in states that have historically received lower levels of federal research funding and helps prepare students for careers and advanced study in science, healthcare and research fields.

Western Nevada College celebrated the achievements of 16 graduates from its Higher Education in Prison Program (HEPP) at Northern Nevada Correctional Center (NNCC) during a commencement ceremony on June 9. 

The graduates earned a combination of associate degrees and certificates, marking significant educational milestones and demonstrating a commitment to personal growth, academic excellence and career readiness. 



The Higher Education in Prison Program provides incarcerated individuals with opportunities to pursue postsecondary education, equipping them with valuable skills and credentials that can support successful reentry into their communities and the workforce. 

Fifty-one Mater Academy students pulled off something incredible in late May.



After earning their associate degrees from Western Nevada College, they crossed the stage AGAIN just days later to receive their high school diplomas! WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe joined Senator Edgar Flores, Principal Olivia Carbajal, Keynote Speaker NV Attorney General Aaron Ford among others during Mater Academy’s graduation ceremony to celebrate our outstanding Jump Start grads — part of WNC’s record-breaking 242 Jump Start graduates in the Class of 2026.

Western Nevada College reached an important milestone on June 12 as the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents approved the college’s 2026-33 Strategic Plan and an updated mission statement during its quarterly meeting at the University of Nevada, Reno.

The approvals mark a significant step forward for WNC and establish a framework that will guide the college’s priorities, decision-making and growth into the future.



Developed through extensive collaboration and informed by institutional data and community input, the strategic plan reflects WNC’s commitment to strengthening educational opportunities and responding to the evolving needs of students and the region. The plan centers on five key priorities: access, learner success, workforce, organizational health and community.

Western Nevada College joined thousands of residents and visitors in celebrating one of the capital city’s favorite summer traditions during the 31st Annual Taste of Downtown Carson City.

As a proud event sponsor, WNC welcomed attendees to its downtown tent for an evening filled with community connection, conversation and celebration. Guests stopped by throughout the event to meet with college representatives, pick up WNC giveaways and learn more about educational opportunities available across the college. From academic degree pathways and workforce training to Continuing Education and Kids College programs, the event provided an opportunity for WNC to connect with current and future students, families, alumni, business partners and community members in a festive and welcoming environment.

The annual event brought together local food vendors, live entertainment and community organizations while showcasing the strong spirit that defines Carson City.



The college was also honored to support an event benefiting Advocates to End Domestic Violence, helping raise awareness for an organization that provides vital services and support throughout the region.

Western Nevada College’s Continuing Education program is helping even more young adventurers stay active this summer with scholarships available for upcoming Kids College Summer Sports Camps during the weeks of July 13-17 and July 27-31.

Already underway, College for Kids has delivered memorable experiences ranging from jiu-jitsu and outdoor activities to community service projects such as feeding pets of the homeless and picking up trash, giving children opportunities to learn, grow and connect.

Through WNC’s partnership with Skiing is Believing, the Summer Sports Camp offers an energetic and engaging environment where youth can discover new activities, build confidence and develop healthy habits while making lasting friendships. Each week includes a rotating lineup of activities such as mountain biking, hiking, martial arts, softball and baseball, archery, general fitness, flag football, inline skating, and more.



All activities are led by Skiing is Believing staff and sport-specific coaches who help create a welcoming and supportive environment for campers of all experience levels. Camp sessions run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with single-day registration options available to provide flexibility for families. Extended care is also offered from 8-9 a.m. and 3-5 p.m. Designed for children ages 8-14, the multidisciplinary camp introduces participants to a variety of sports and fitness activities while encouraging teamwork, movement and community engagement.

A selection of platinum prints by photographer Adam Jahiel are on display through Sept. 9 in the Bristlecone Gallery on the Western Nevada College's Carson City campus.

The exhibition features images from Jahiel’s "The Last Cowboy" series, which documents the lives of cowboys and the traditions of ranching in the American West.

In 1989, Jahiel was sent to a ranch on the California-Nevada border to photograph the famed rodeo bull Skoal’s Pacific Bell for The Sacramento Bee. That assignment began a long-term exploration of the cowboys of the Great Basin. Every summer from 2006, Jahiel traveled to parts of Idaho, Nevada and Oregon, capturing images of the region’s cowboys, landscapes and historic ranches.

The Bristlecone Gallery is open weekdays, except holidays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Western Nevada College recently welcomed Cameron George, Regional Representative for U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, for a visit to its Carson City campus.

During his time at WNC, George met with President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe and toured the campus to learn more about the college’s programs, facilities and continued efforts to expand educational opportunities across Western Nevada.

The visit provided an opportunity to highlight Western Nevada College’s commitment to student success, workforce development and community engagement while sharing the many ways WNC serves learners throughout the region.

Adorable smiles, spirited songs and proud family moments filled Carson Nugget Hall as the Western Nevada College Child Development Center celebrated its annual Preschool Graduation on Friday, June 5, marking an exciting milestone for its young learners.



The ceremony honored 18 children who have completed their preschool journey and are preparing to take the next big step into kindergarten. Family members, friends and educators gathered to recognize the graduates' growth and achievements during their time at the center.

Jack C. Davis Observatory Director Dr. Thomas Herring provided a special star party for the Rotary Club of Carson City on June 23 at the observatory. With clear skies in place, the Rotary Club members were treated to an ideal night for celestial viewing.

Founded in 1938, the club includes more than 60 members (WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe and WNC Chief Advancement Officer and Foundation Executive Director Niki Gladys are current members).

WNC's regular star parties, which are open to the public, are scheduled for July 4 and 11. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the free gatherings focused on viewing the stars and planets, and learning more about the cosmos.

It’s back to normal for the Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance runs after being impacted by the Marlette Dam and Flume pipeline construction projects a year ago.

In fact, TRT Race Director George Ruiz is reporting that it is a sold-out event again. There are 600 entrants in four races for the 25th anniversary of the runs, which start and finish on July 18 and 19 at Western Nevada College’s John L. Harvey Field.

Ruiz has been involved with the event since its inception.

“The biggest milestone is bringing the race down to Carson City and Western Nevada College," he said. "Parking and space were always an issue operating at Spooner State Park. Bringing it to WNC changed all that. The baseball stadium is a beautiful venue, the trails leading up to the Tahoe Rim Trail are fantastic and it made the race much more difficult than the original course.”  



Ruiz says volunteers are needed for the 100-mile, 100K, 50K and 23K races.

With fewer people at the college this time of the year and plenty to eat on our delectable campus, it's the season for many wildlife visitors. Most recently, some young bucks took to the flower garden in front of the Bristlecone Building.

WNC provides an ideal wildlife habitat for deer, lizards, snakes, squirrels, chipmunks, jack rabbits, owls, crows and hawks. Coyotes, bobcats, bears, and mountain lions have been spotted on campus at one time or another. Lizards, crows and jack rabbits are the most common visitors.
