North Oakville fire under control,
no injuries reported

A fire in North Oakville at a new subdivision under construction at Dundas and Ninth Line was reported to the Oakville Fire Department.
Ten homes were fully involved in the fire and Oakville FD crews engaged in aggressive suppression efforts to successfully get the fire under control.
Oakville FD has reported no injuries from firefighters nor members of the community and will provide further updates as additional information becomes available.

Vaughan Council takes steps towards independence from York Region | |

In response to a proposal to consolidate all of the municipalities in York Region by Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti, the mayors of York Region’s eight other municipalities opposed his amalgamation proposal for a mega-city of York.
Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca moved a motion directing city staff to explore “a new governance model as part of the provincial government's facilitation process that could enable it, and all other York Region municipalities, to become single tier while enabling certain identified shared services across the region to be funded and administered in common with all other lower tier York Region municipalities.”

This afternoon Premier Doug Ford commented on Mayor Del Duca’s independence initiative for Vaughan:
“I understand why Mayor Del Duca would want that. He wants to be able to move forward on housing. They're paying a lot of fees up to the region. A lot of cities want their independence and I don't blame them.
"I always want to sit down with the mayors; they know their city better than anyone and the city council. And it's just a way to streamline government a little bit and get things done and start moving forward."
When the Ontario government conducted a regional review of municipalities in 2019, Oakville residents spoke out strongly against a potential amalgamation of Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville into a “City of Halton.” Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark cited the strong opposition to amalgamation in an interview: “The people in Halton Region really participated in this regional government review."
Earlier this year, Mayor Burton asked residents and community leaders to think about Oakville’s long-term future:
"We fought three years ago to avoid being rolled up into a city of Halton. I guess some of us were fighting to keep the status quo. Some of us myself anyway, I was fighting to preserve the option that we could go the independent route like the City of Mississauga wants to be.
"On that question, you might want to know that the government has been giving Brampton and Mississauga and Caledon signals that they're minded to give them that independent status. So that makes the question a live one, I think for Oakville, like, who do you want to be? After we're gone, who do we want to Oakville to be?”

Food 4 Life hosts Community Food Support program at Town Hall |  | |
Food 4 Life, a local organization dedicated to combating food insecurity, has partnered with our Town to ensure that struggling households have access to the nourishment they need.
Food 4 Life has spearheaded a Community Food Support Program hosted at our Town Hall weekly.
This endeavor has been instrumental in mobilizing the community and rallying around those in need.
Thanks to the dedication of Food 4 Life's volunteers, 55 struggling households in Oakville have been able to put food on their tables and alleviate the burden of hunger.
“I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to Food 4 Life and their team of volunteers for their tireless work in bringing sustenance to our community.” In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." Residents are invited to provide feedback on the plan, which outlines the vision, mission, guiding principles, strategic priorities and objectives, key community indicators and action plan that will help guide Council’s decision making over the next four years, and what the community envisions for its future.

The Town of Oakville is excited to announce the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts (OCPA) and the Oakville Transit websites have been refreshed!
The websites (OCPA and Oakville Transit) have been designed to be easier to navigate and accessible on any mobile device, including laptops, tablets and phones.

Region approves additional funding for seniors' developments, rental units in Oakville | |

A proposed affordable housing development for seniors in Oakville will cost nearly $2 million more to be completed.
At a meeting held earlier this week, Halton Regional Council approved $1,951,613 in additional funding for the construction of 14-semi-detached bungalows for seniors at 1258 Rebecca St. (images below).

Ontario Launches New Fund to Build Skilled Trades Training Centres
The Ontario government is working for workers by investing $224 million to build and upgrade training centres and help tackle the province’s historic labour shortage. Applications for the new Skills Development Fund (SDF) Capital Stream open on June 30. It will help unions, Indigenous centres, and industry associations with funding to build new training centres, or upgrade and convert existing facilities into new training centres with state-of-the-art equipment and technology.
