From the Desk of Fr. Mike Nacius, Pastor
-------If you were to look around the Upper or Primary Grade Centers of our three-time award-winning Blue-Ribbon School you would find the classrooms as well as the hallways empty of administration, faculty and staff. The school year has the school buildings filled with the energy of our students and the dedication and commitment of faculty and administration. During the summer there are other types of work that takes place in the school buildings.

-------The short months of summer are filled with projects that help allow for the passing on of faith and educating of the minds and hearts of our students. The summer construction projects, the upgrades to technology and to the buildings have the schools filled with a different type of buzz.

-------One word that gets the hair on the back of my neck to stand up is “asbestos”. Well, that word was shared recently in the midst of projects that are in the process of being undertaken. The School Breezeway, built over fifty years ago has asbestos panels. These panels need to be ‘abated’ before any work can be done on the breezeway. After fifty years of use, and wear and tear by our Lake County winters, the time has come to investigate the structural integrity of the breezeway. The discovery of the asbestos in the exterior panels has slightly delayed this project. Asbestos abatement has to take place prior to any other effort on the breezeway. As of today, the planned abatement project will take place the week of July 7 – July 14. At that time the walkway and driveway underneath the breezeway will be closed to all vehicles and pedestrians. Please plan according for coming to Mass at that time.

-------The breezeway is just one of many projects taking place at the Church of St. Mary this summer. Some of the other projects include upgrades to the safety and security systems at the School and Parish, improving and upgrading the technology infrastructures on campus, fixing, repairing and sealing/striping the parking lots, updating the boiler for the Upper Grade Center school buildings, replacing the Fire Detection System at the Primary Grade Center. These are some of the main projects being undertaken this summer.

-------These projects have been discussed and reviewed by the Parish Finance Council. The council has a long-term capital projects plan to guide and prepare projects in the scheduling of work, subject to evolving situations that consistently require plan adjustment. In additional to the monthly financial statements, the upcoming projects are discussed and reviewed. Donations to the Fr. Barry Preservation Fund are one means of revenue to cover some of these expenses. Bequests made to the parish and unrestricted donations by parishioners assists the Finance Council in planning for and funding these projects and all ministry at our parish.

-------This is the last and final weekend of the current fiscal year. The Archdiocese of Chicago fiscal year runs from July 1 – June 30 each year. Thanks go out to one and all for your generous support in the offertory collection and other collections supporting the parish and efforts of the Archdiocese and the Catholic Church Universal.

-------Mark your calendars and save the date for Saturday, August 5. In addition to the annual Lake Bluff Gazebo Mass, we are planning on offering food and fellowship following the 5:00pm evening Mass. If you would like to participate and help organize this parish celebration please reach out to my Administrative Assistant, Mrs. Leslie Ardell at the Parish Office [(847) 234.0205] or at Lardell@churchofstmary.org.

-------I am welcoming a priest friend from Zambia to our parish for some time this summer. In addition to visiting me he is also visiting another priest friend of his on assignment here in the United States. Fr. Deogratius “Deo” Kaundula is a priest of the diocese of Lusaka, Zambia. I look forward to you welcoming him and introducing him to you in the coming weeks.

-------God bless you in living your faith in word and action these summer days,
