Annual Conference Wrap-Up

Clergy and lay members of the Northern Illinois Annual Conference, along with guests, met to Practice Hope. Highlights included a youth-led panel during the Laity Session, the Celebration of Ministry service featuring ordination, commissioning, and recognition of ministry anniversaries, inspiring lunch-and-learn opportunities, Bishop’s episcopal address on becoming “refugia” in challenging times, and a public witness demonstrating love of neighbor. Members also passed the 2027 conference budget and other legislation, worshiped together, and explored ways to practice hope in their churches and communities.

One of the most encouraging signs of hope was the leadership of young people. Youth shared their perspectives during the Laity Session panel, offered prayers in worship, spoke thoughtfully at the microphones during plenary discussions, and actively participated in the conference's work. Their voices, faith, and leadership reminded members that the church’s future is not just ahead of us; it is already present among us. Lake South was represented by Vanesa Cisneros (Alsip: La Gracia), Ruth Pichardo (Chicago: Amor de Dios), Vivian Porrez (Chicago: Resurrection), and Jarice Shaw (Chicago: Maple Park).

Our generosity was on full display. Members donated approximately 7,000 pounds of supplies, enough to fill two trucks, for Midwest Mission through the Mission Challenge, while churches and individuals contributed $30,960.52 so far to the Bishop’s Appeal supporting Education for Central Conferences. If you missed the opportunity to give, donations to both efforts can still be made.

Robbie Moultrie Honored with #BeUMC Award

New for 2026, the #BeUMC Awards recognize individuals and congregations who embody our shared calling to love boldly, serve joyfully, and lead courageously as part of The United Methodist Church's mission. Learn more. Robbie Moultrie has been named the 2026 #BeUMC Laity Award recipient in recognition of her faithful and enduring lay ministry through Resurrection United Methodist Church. For more than 60 years, she has consistently demonstrated that faithful service extends beyond prayer into tangible acts of compassion that care for the mind, body, and soul of God’s people. Almost 200 March for Justice for Immigrants

Members of the NIC AC took part in the public demonstration on Mon., June 15, marching to show support for immigrants, refugees, and all those facing discrimination and unjust treatment. Participants sang, prayed, carried signs, and heard messages from church leaders, including Bishop Schwerin, who reminded marchers that “neighbors are not metaphors” but beloved members of God’s kin-dom. Find ways your congregation can continue this work through prayer, advocacy, relationship-building, and support for immigrants in your own neighborhood.

DIY Faithful Action: Loving Our Neighbor Community Engagement Event The DIY (Do-it-yourself) format encourages each congregation to organize an event that works for their church while bearing witness to God’s commandment to "love your neighbor as yourself.” CCORR created a checklist to assist churches with planning an event that acknowledges the humanity and dignity of our immigrant siblings.
Conference-Wide Day of Action – On Sept. 13, churches across the conference are invited to participate in a coordinated day of public witness to demonstrate large-scale support for our immigrant brothers and sisters.

All-District Youth Choir

The Lake South District has begun preparing for its upcoming Youth Ignite. Our youth choir has begun rehearsing. NIC Students Earn UM Higher Education Scholarships

Thirty-four Northern Illinois Conference students received United Methodist scholarships from the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) in 2025, totaling $82,522 in support for their educational journeys. These scholarships are available to both undergraduate and graduate students, with GBHEM awarding approximately $4 million annually to students across the connection. Learn more.

Congratulations to Vanesa Cisneros Francisco, from Alsip: La Gracia UMC, for receiving a scholarship to attend Saint Xavier University for a Bachelor of Business Administration.

Do you have news to share?

We are always looking for stories of what is happening in your church. We welcome articles from churches highlighting ministries, outreach, and missions that tell the story of being vital Christians. Events considered should be of conference-wide appeal and United Methodist-related.

District eNews are sent out the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month. Please submit stories and events by end of business on the 2nd and 4th Mondays. Space is limited. Stories of fewer than 250 words are preferred. Submissions will be edited at the discretion of Communications staff. Information can be emailed to communications@umcnic.org.
