The Rev. John Heidel begins as Priest-in-Charge at Church of the Epiphany in Vacaville
The Rev. John Heidel has accepted a call as Priest-in-Charge at Church of the Epiphany in Vacaville. He celebrated his first Sunday with the congregation on June 18.
John graduated from Fuller Seminary in 2014 with a Master of Divinity and completed a Certificate of Anglican Studies from CDSP in 2018. He served as a seminarian and a transitional Deacon at churches in this diocese, and was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Megan at the height of the COVID pandemic. He accepted a call to as a “remote Rector” to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Madisonville, Kentucky, primarily serving from afar, with regular trips each month to visit the congregation once the pandemic began to ebb. John is excited and grateful to return to the Diocese of Northern California to serve at Epiphany.
John’s interests include fishing, boating, and mountain biking. His wife Sarah is an Assistant Principal at Benicia High School. They have been married for thirteen years and are parents to three daughters, two of which live at home.
Welcome to Epiphany, Vacaville, and to the diocese!

St. George's, Carmichael awards scholarships to local high school grads
Saint George’s Episcopal Church awarded the 2023 Gregory Kenneth Sherrill Memorial Scholarships to this year’s recipients at a church service on June 11. Parishioners had the opportunity to meet scholarship recipients at a reception following the service. The scholarship has been given out since 1985 to students who graduated in the San Juan Unified School District.
This year three scholarships were given and awarded to individuals who fully intend to matriculate at a college this calendar year. On the scholarship committee this year were Bob Olsen, Sandy Olsen and John Karsten. One scholarship, awarded in the amount of $4,000, was given to Stephanie Manasyan of Del Campo High School who will be attending UCLA with a major in Biology on a pre-med track.
A $3,000 scholarship was awarded to Luke Tuter, also a graduate of Del Campo High School, who will attend UC Berkeley with a major in Business Economics. McKenna Pacey, the $2,000 scholarship recipient, graduated from Casa Roble High School and will attend California State University San Diego with a major in Dietetics.
It is a blessing for Saint George’s to be able to award grants of financial aid to such worthy students.

Missioner for Disaster Resilience
Disaster Resilience or Response?
Traditionally, the Episcopal Church has been generous in donating to response and recovery efforts in time of disaster, however, there is a more efficient way to put our funds to work in support of this important ministry.
Did you know that financial donations can serve approximately 5 times as many people when spent on disaster prevention and preparedness as when spent on disaster response and recovery? That old adage is true: an ounce of prevention really is worth a pound of cure.
Unfortunately, the need has been greater than the donations to the diocesan disaster fund can support and we need your help to refill the fund.
Thanks to last winter's rain and snow, fire season is getting a later start in the diocese. However, all of that precipitation means there are more fuels to burn when it does start.
Please help us help all our communities to prepare for the disasters before they happen, and donate to the bishop’s disaster fund today.
