It's About the Collaboration
Kirk T. came into the Brian Garcia Welcome Center seeking assistance to return to his ex-wife in Oklahoma. Kirk stated he was experiencing homelessness in Phoenix for about a month due to multiple medical conditions. HSC Staff contacted Kirk's ex-wife in Oklahoma, who was happy to have him return home. While HSC Staff was confirming he would be going to a safe, stable living environment, they worked with Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS) to secure a shelter bed during the process. HSC Staff then purchased a Greyhound ticket for Kirk to travel to Oklahoma. Kirk arrived safely, is reunited with his ex-wife and is getting much needed medical assistance.
 
With the focus of all partners at the HSC on helping people move from street to home, we are able to reunite people with family, friends and other support systems every day. This "diversion" program is the fastest, most economical way to end a person's homelessness when it is the best intervention based on their needs. Thank you for your support to continue providing this service.

The Phoenix Business Journal recently ran a "My View" article written by Amy Schwabenlender, HSC Executive Director, which brings more awareness to what is needed to truly end homelessness in our community as we know it:

In cities and towns across Maricopa County and throughout Arizona, unsheltered homelessness is on the rise. With housing development not keeping pace with decades of population growth, flat wages and income slammed by increasing costs of living and rental rates — and a global pandemic — it is no surprise that homelessness is surging. 

Our communities have never had enough emergency shelter to meet the full needs of people who lose their housing. The situation today has only intensified the stress on individuals experiencing homelessness and the resource providers and advocates searching for solutions. [Read More...]

The Next ThirstAID Donation Drop-off is
Saturday, July 9th, 9 am to Noon
Due to the 4th of July holiday, our next ThirstAid Donation Drop-off has been moved to Saturday, July 9th 9am to Noon. Please mark your calendars!

In collaboration with 15 Campus partners, we need at least 100,000 bottles of water per month during the summer heat to help clients stay hydrated and healthy.
