June 4 Greetings

Dear Ones,

It’s Friday of the first week of June. Tim and I are in Los Angeles to see our son Ben sing! Needless to say, we are very proud and very excited. We arrived about dinnertime yesterday, so we stopped by one of our favorite Cuban restaurants, Versailles, and picked up two orders of their famous garlic chicken and headed to the beach.

When we lived in Culver City, we could drive a block and a half north, hang a left onto Culver Boulevard, and be at the beach in Playa del Rey in ten minutes. Right now there is a lot of construction going on in Playa del Rey, so we headed south to Dockweiler Beach. A little bit of whiplash occurred of course: from 110 degrees outside Blythe, CA to 64 degrees at the beach in the course of four hours! This is one of the few beaches that allows fires, so even though the marine layer was in, the beach was busy with folks huddled around firepits, bringing back sweet memories of fun youth hot dog roasts from when my sons were in middle and high school.

The hoodies came out of the luggage, and we knew that somewhere out there the sun was setting as we ate our dinners on the hood of the car…good times!

I did promise beach pictures…

As I announced in yesterday’s daily email, there are some exciting things happening at Emmanuel. The Church in a Changing World Task Force has moved into stage five of our pandemic reopening plan: all the chairs will be back in the sanctuary, there is no limit on numbers, and those fully vaccinated do not need to wear masks!

We continue to encourage masks and distancing for those who choose or are not able to be vaccinated, including children. The new “normal” includes the following:

  • we will continue to receive communion using the individual kits,
  • we ask that everyone sign in at the Welcome table so that we have everyone’s phone number in the event that we need to contact trace, and
  • we will have our offering plate at the welcome table to avoid passing from hand to hand.

All this begins Sunday! If you are most comfortable still wearing a mask and distancing, that is okay too. Please join us at 9:00 a.m. for the live-streamed traditional service or the 11:00 a.m. contemporary service as we go bravely into a new way of being church!

With this return to open worship, we are in dire need of worship team members! Would you be willing to be a greeter, an usher, a liturgist or staff the welcome table? It takes many hands to make our worship happen. If you have done one of these tasks in the past or are totally new at it, please let Pr. Tricia or Mary in the office know, or contact Carol Northrup at carol.northrup@verizon.net.

Do you help with the Interfaith Meal?

Would like to be part of the Fellowship Ministry that will be serving food during fellowship time in the future?

If you answered “yes” to either or both of those questions, you need to have a Food Handler’s Card! The certification is good for two years, and to make things easy, we are offering the class next Wednesday, June 9 at 9:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Please contact Mary in the church office to sign up for the class, we need at least 10 people!

It is wonderful to have some things returning to normal, so beginning this Sunday, June 6, we will resume collection food items for the Prescott Valley Food Pantry at 8781 Spouse. Here are the items most needed:

  • canned fruits
  • canned vegetables
  • tuna
  • canned chicken
  • pasta
  • mac & cheese
  • peanut butter
  • boxed cereal
  • rice

Cash donations are always appreciated so they can fill in with items such as fresh food, breads and meats.

Have you got plans for next weekend? Check out Camp ALOMA’s annual Burger Bash on Saturday, June 12 beginning at noon! Try your hand at all things camp and indulge in some great grilled burgers, too. This is our local Lutheran Camp, and the Bash is your opportunity to see what the campers and counselors will be up to this summer. RSVP to Office@CampAloma.com.

A wish list from the Building and Property Ministry

  • Paint chips! You have one more week to drop your color suggestions for the church exterior by the church office.
  • Still looking for Weed Warriors, to help keep our church grounds looking spiffy! Contact Keith Namock to volunteer, especially if you are available on Saturday mornings 928-800-1599.

Don’t know where your church nametag is? Let Mary know in the office and she will make you a new one! Wear your nametag; it helps our new members (and this sorta old member, too)!

The Habitat for Humanity golf tournament has been postponed until August! Look for the flyer in future emails.

You know I am always looking for unique kinds of instruments, here is a virtual harp guitar orchestra from all over the world playing “The Water is Wide”.

Jasper Sea singing Gonna Shout All Over Heaven

Here is "The Doxology" sung by Anthem Lights and Selah. The melody is known as the Old One Hundred. "Doxology" is quite literally "praise to God", from Greek "saying glory".

Here's one tree I miss from SoCal: the jacaranda! My neighbor had a huge one across the street from us!

A Bible verse for today:

I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.

Jeremiah 31:3

Have a blessed weekend everyone; see you in worship!

Yours in Christ,
