The San Mateo Union High School District Board of Trustees invites you to attend a Special Board Meeting on Friday, June 4 at 10 a.m. via Zoom. The Board meeting includes a presentation on the following topic of community interest:
- The Board will reconsider a motion to raise the LGBT Flag at District schools and the District Office in the months of June and October.

Free Meals Available at San Mateo and Mills High Schools This Summer
This Summer, from June 7 - July 30 anyone 18 and under can receive free breakfast and lunch at two San Mateo Union High School District school sites:

- Dates/Times: June 7 - July 30, Monday - Friday, 8 - 10 a.m.
- Locations:
- Mills High School, 400 Murchison Dr., Millbrae (Pick up on Sequoia Ave side) or
- San Mateo High School, 506 N. Delaware St., San Mateo (Pick up on Poplar Ave side)
- No student ID is required.
- If a child is not present, parents/guardians will need to provide name, student’s name and the student’s school site.
- Middle and elementary school students are welcome

Webinar: College Admission Processes and the Pandemic
The San Mateo Union High School District and the GATE Parents' Group welcome Aragon High School Teacher Kevin Nelson on Wednesday, June 2 for a webinar: College Admissions Processes and the Pandemic. As the GATE Parents College Essay Mentor, Mr. Nelson has worked with over 700 SMUHSD students (from all of the sites) in the past decade on crafting the college essay to properly complement the required application items.

The Community Resiliency Model (CRM)® is a mental health training for parents, caregivers, and community members to support families and their wider social network. The primary focus of this skills-based program is to re-set the natural balance of the nervous system in order to bring the body, mind, and spirit back into greater balance.
The FREE, two-part training will focus on the six CRM wellness skills, as well as the neuroscience behind the model. Attendees are encouraged to attend both trainings, as Part 1 and Part 2 will each focus on three of the CRM wellness skills.
This special event is sponsored by San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE) and Sequoia Union High School District, in partnership with The Parent Venture (The Parent Education Series.)

SMUHSD Educators Featured in SMCOE Art Show
Via SMCOE: The arts are a powerful and moving way we make meaning of our world. As we begin to transition out of a pandemic, the San Mateo County Office of Education has curated a new visual art show, called "Arts as Meaning Making," to honor and highlight our common humanity through the arts. Each piece was created by an educator in the Bay Area. May they spark curiosity, dialogue, and your own "meaning making."

Burlingame High Students Recognized in Architecture Competition
This year, there were 175 participants from 19 schools in five different countries. Kylie and Katherine won 2nd place (and $150) in the Group Design category for their project "Flow Tide." You can see more of their project in their slides or video.
Aahana won an Honorable Mention in the Design Process category for her project "The Nest." You can see more of her project in her slides or video.

Hillsdale Robotics Team Wins Botball 2021 Tournament
On May 15, 2021 the Hillsdale Robotics Team came out victorious at the Botball 2021 Tournament, hosted by the KISS Institute for Practical Robotics (KIPR). 45 teams from across the country competed in the event. After a few exciting rounds, the team ranked 3rd in seeding, 1st place in Double Elimination, and 1st place overall. It was a proud moment for the team and definitely one for the books! The team also qualifies and is excited for the international competition, GCER, in July.

Two SMUHSD Students are Young Playwright Project Finalists
PlayGround has announced the finalists for the annual Young Playwrights Project, with four new plays from Bay Area high school students. The plays will stream online May 28 as part of the PlayGround Zoom Fest. This year, the prompt for play submissions was “justice.”
Jane Palladino's play, How an Ice Cream Truck Can Damn You to Hell, is about a pregnant woman who attends her late husband’s funeral along with his girlfriend. Palladino is a sophomore at Aragon High School. Frieda de Lackner will direct the reading.
Bread and Circuses by Anna Vanderford and directed by Markus Potter, follows Dorothie as she goes to visit her twin sister, Bessie, at her traveling circus company, only to discover that Bessie is missing. Vanderford attends Hillsdale High School and developed Bread and Circuses with Matthew Keuter as part of the TheatreWorks Silicon Valley Young Playwrights Project.

Hillsdale Teacher Recognized by Former Student/Cornell University Student
Each spring, Cornell University asks its Merrill Presidential Scholars to recognize the high school teacher who most inspired their academic development. Hillsdale High School graduate Hannah Doyle, a student in Cornell's College of Engineering named Hillsdale High's Chris Stallings (pictured to the right with his students on a field trip) as the teacher who most inspired her scholastic development.

2021 California Science and Engineering Fair Winners Announced
San Mateo High School's Alexis MacAvoy was named as a finalist in the 2021 virtual Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, which was held May 16-21, 2021.
See Alexis project entry: Investigating the Efficiency of Carpobrotus edulis, Kelp, and Walnut Shell Bioethanol in Comparison to Corn Ethanol Using Percent Yield and Mass Fractionation.
This year's fair drew 811 students, with finalists selected by a volunteer pool of scientists and engineers from higher education and private industry. Students took home a combined total of almost $65,000 in cash prizes.
