Charles Henry Lüders was born in Philadelphia, the son of Thomas L. and Eleanor C. Lüders. He was an American poet, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, and a contributor to Our Continent, Life, Puck, Scribner’s Monthly, and Century. It was only in the last few years of his life, however, that he began contributing to periodicals and some recognized him as one of the most promising up-and-coming poets in the United States.

A.J. Cronin was a Scottish novelist and physician. During World War I, he served as a surgeon sub-lieutenant in the Royal Medical Volunteer Reserve. Then he trained at various hospitals in Glasgow and Dublin before accepting a short-term position as Medical Inspector of Mines. In 1930, after being diagnosed with a chronic duodenal ulcer, he took six months of leave and wrote his first novel, Hatter’s Castle (1931). Much of Cronin’s fiction pertains to a doctor’s struggle to balance scientific integrity with social obligations....

Collection of 11 glass plate photos circa 1908, (plates measure 81mm x 100mm) in this collection with all in fine condition except "June Bug" with two cracks. They are housed in their original purpose built box with a leather strap and brass bands and each slide in a small white envelope .

These standard 3.25 x 4 inch glass-mounted lantern slides had likely been used as lecture slides by Alexander Graham Bell’s Aerial Experiment Association group with some slides having applied labels with sequence numbers. Consequently all would be circa 1908 copy photographs rather than originals. These slides are from the estate of the first British subject to fly in a heavier than air powered aircraft, Casey Baldwin and stayed in his family (grandson) until 1995...

Richard Theodore Pennefather was from 1848 to 1854 the private secretary of Sir Edmund Walker Head, lieutenant governor of New Brunswick, then came with him, still as private secretary, to the Province of Canada, when Head was made its governor general in 1854. In February 1856, Pennefather became the governor general’s civil secretary and superintendent-general of Indian affairs in the Province of Canada. Pennefather’s greatest contribution to Canada was his chairmanship of a three-man commission which conducted an inquiry from 1856 to 1858 into the Indian Department’s operations....

Louis Welsh.was a Calgary based Canadian horse jumper. The most famous high jumper that Welsh promoted was Barra Lad, a hackney stallion. Barra Lad, who was ridden by We|sh's son Louis, toured across Canada and into the United States, out-jumping all competition.

Signature on 3 x 1-1/2 inch card, accompanied by a W. J. Oliver, postcard 5-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches of ”Barra Lad” with writing on verso by his mother, Mrs. Peter Welch, noting (in pencil) the history of the name. The autograph postcard signed dates from circa 1935...
