Re-Opening for Public Mass, Guidelines & Schedule
REOPENING of the CHURCH of ST. MARY for the
CELEBRATION OF PUBLIC MASS

June 5 th , 2020

It is with great joy that I share this news to all of you: the Church of St. Mary has applied and been certified by the Archdiocese to resume the public celebration of Mass!  We, like many other elements of reopening, have been asked to phase it in and gradually open up our Mass schedule.  To that end, daily Mass will be offered on Tuesday, June 9th and Friday June 12th at 8:00am.  Masses for the Feast of Corpus Christi will be offered on Saturday, June 13th at 5:00pm and Sunday, June 14th at 10:00am .  At least one Mass will continued to be livestreamed on the Church of St. Mary Facebook page each day for the foreseeable future.  We will continue with this schedule for Masses each week moving forward and please refer to the Church of St. Mary website and Facebook page for the latest information.

Registration is required to attend any of our Masses, Private Prayer or Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and you can sign up using SignUp Genius .  If you are unsure how to do this, you may call our receptionist at 847-234-0205 or email receptionist@churchofstmary.org and they will help you to sign up.  To start, a maximum number of 50 people will be allowed to attend Mass.  If anybody shows up without a registration, priority will first be granted to those whom have signed up, and then if there are still available seats, you will be allowed in. Eventually we will be able to double the number to 100 attendees per Mass.  Once we are sure the process is safe and we have the volunteers necessary for each celebration , we will add more public Masses to our schedule.

During "normal" times we tend to see around 1,400 participants at Mass each weekend.  Being unable to accommodate such numbers at all, we ask that you be mindful of the number of people who may wish to be signing up for Masses after our 3 month absence of gathering together in person.  The obligation of attending Sunday Mass continues to be lifted by Cardinal Cupich for the time being.

Volunteering
Thank you to all our volunteers who have signed up thus far!  The simple volunteer training will be conducted on site as we help out at each type of prayer or Mass, and guidelines are included in your SignUp confirmation email which helps to explain the process and answer many questions.  Please SignUp to volunteer using the Church of St. Mary SignUp Genius tool.   The restriction of volunteers needing to be under the age of 65 has been lifted.  All those above 65 may now sign up to volunteer, however we ask that if you have any underlying health conditions, or feel ill, to please refrain from helping at this time.

Key Points
  • The south entrance is the only entrance to the Church.  The north doors are the only exit to help with traffic flow patterns.
  • Face coverings are to be worn at all times in the Church.
  • Please maintain social distancing at all times.
  • Please follow directional signs and sit only in designated pews and on the blue crosses in each pew.  Those who are domiciled together may sit in the same pew and do not need to observe social distancing.
  • Volunteers will help direct you.
  • Please refer to the Archdiocese of Chicago Parishioner Reopening Guide for additional details.
It is with great joy that we are able to gather once more.  It will be a learning curve for all of us, and it may feel disorienting.  However, we will get through this and I look forward to celebrating with you around the altar once more!

May God Bless you,

Fr. Mark

GENERAL GUIDELINES
Below are a few guidelines for being in the Church.  There are numerous signs around the exterior and interior of the Church to help facilitate these new patterns.
  • Volunteers:  Parish volunteers will be on site to help direct and guide all of us as we begin to open and re-enter the Church.
  • Masks/Face Covering:  Mask or face coverings are required to be worn by all individuals at all times while in the Church building.
  • Hand Sanitizer:  Sanitize your hands as you enter the Church building.
  • Social Distance:  Maintain proper social distancing of 6 feet apart, unless you are with somebody who lives in the same household as you.  There are floor markings to help facilitate this.
  • 50 Persons Maximum:  A maximum of 50 individuals (excluding the priest and other ministers) are allowed in the Church at one time.  In inclement weather, personal vehicles would be a necessary shelter while waiting.
  • Church Entrance:  The south door, near the elevator, is the only entrance into the Church.  If there are 50 individuals in the Church, please form a line along the exterior south wall of the Church and a volunteer greeter will let you in.
  • Church Exit:  The north doors onto the main plaza will be the only exit from the Church (unless you require use of the elevator).
  • Church East Entrance - Emergency Exit Only:  Please do not use the East doors onto the stairways for either entering or exiting.
  • Surface Sanitizing:  All surfaces touched by persons are sanitized prior to the next opening of the Church.
  • Restrooms Unavailable:  For the safety of all, the restrooms will not be available, unless it's an emergency.
  • Registration Required:  Registration is required for Public Mass, Private Prayer and Adoration though the Church of St. Mary Registration, SignUp Genius:  If you need help, please call the Parish Center Office at 847-234-0205 or email receptionist@churchofstmary.org for assistance.

VOLUNTEERS
We are requesting volunteers to assist and volunteer guidelines will be sent to all volunteers when they SignUp for a  Church of St. Mary Volunteer SignUP shift:
Volunteer Tasks:
  • Greeters will assist in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the church, participate in the liturgy/sacrament, and exit the church.
  • Team members will combine some of the functions of an usher, such as directing participants to appropriate seating/waiting areas, but will include additional responsibilities, including, but not limited to, making sure attendees use hand sanitizer upon entering, are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill.
  • Given the circumstances, greeters will need to be tactful and firm paying careful attention to all people on-site. To support parish greeter teams, rudimentary training tips on handling difficult situations will be provided.
  • Volunteers will ensure that: all supplies needed for each sacramental celebration/gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and propped physically open prior to attendees' arrival/departure, and windows are opened.
  • Volunteers will help maintain and sanitize essential and trafficked areas of the church before and after the church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if necessary, in addition to approved cleaning/disinfecting supplies.
May God grant you peace and comfort in this time.
From the Desk of Fr. Mark Augustine, Administrator
June 5, 2020

Dear Church of St. Mary,

Over the last week our parish celebrated the sacraments of Reconciliation and Baptism in the church for the first time since March 14. A funeral was held on Monday with family members joining virtually via Zoom.  The church was open for periods of private prayer and an all-school Mass to end the academic year was celebrated, again via Zoom.  The church is beginning to open, and it is wonderful to have these celebrations. To participate in the life of prayer in the church, to return to the life of grace is what we all truly need, now more than ever.  We are still a ways off from our church being filled and all being able to gather in person once more, but we are slowly on the way!

It was lovely to open the church this past week, even if done so on a limited basis. It is still far to go to return to the celebrations and prayers that we have been accustomed to most of our lives. For myself, it was odd.  Honestly, a little odd to have people back in the church after months of remaining empty, yes, but odd because we know this is still not what we hoped for.   What was odder for me though was the continued unrest surrounding us. The violence and rioting which erupted over the last week, in a widespread manner, from what often began as a peaceful protest fighting against racism, injustice, and corruption. All matters of justice, which should be corrected - absolutely. The peaceful protest offered Market Square this past Wednesday evening is a great example of how this can be accomplished. Yet across the country many of these protests unfortunately devolved to violence, destruction, and terror.  It was heartbreaking, horrifying, sad, and scary.

Our world seems at a tipping point, or perhaps to some, has already been tipped. I am hoping the tipping point guides us towards the life of grace rather than the life of despair and violence. I have often admitted that I don't know how I would be getting through this situation without our faith. Let society tip to the side of faith; the side of God's kingdom; the side of holiness and witness from the faithful. Let us pray for that reality to happen, today.Thy kingdom come, thy will be done.

As parishes around the country continue to open their doors, we welcome people to come back to God's house; a place of prayer, petitions, supplications, praise, and rest. The dwelling place of God calls and beckons us. While there are still restrictions on how many individuals we can have in our church at a given time, the Church is ready to receive her children once more.  I pray this brings comfort and strength to so many who are exhausted and worn out from everything this year has thrown at us. We need that grace in our lives. We need that grace in our world. We need Jesus Christ. That is the only way we will get through all of this, but I guarantee you, with Christ all things are possible. Keep up the faith and trust in the Lord!

With love,

Fr. Mark Augustine, Administrator
Statement of Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago, on the Murder of George Floyd and Its Aftermath

The past nights I have watched in great personal pain as the pent-up anger of our people caught fire across our country. I saw the city where I was born, the cities where I have lived, the city I pastor now, catch embers from the city where I was educated and burn. Was I horrified at the violence? Yes. But was I surprised? No.

As the saying goes, if you're not outraged, you're not paying attention. What did we expect when we learned that in Minneapolis, a city often hailed as a model of inclusivity, the price of a black life is a counterfeit twenty-dollar bill? When we added another name to the list of those murdered for being black or for caring about the marginalized?

I will not pretend to speak with any authority about the challenges people of color experience in our society.  I do not share the fear they put on when they and their children leave their homes every day. I do not know what it means to be "other." But I know there is a way to fix it.  And the fix begins when we stop talking about the proportionality of "their" response and start talking about the proportionality of "ours." Surely a nation that could put a man in space, his safety assured by the brilliance of black women, can create a fair legal system, equitable education and employment opportunities and ready access to health care. Laws do not solve problems, but they create a system where racism in all its forms is punished and playing fields are leveled.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been called a great equalizer. It has been even more a great revealer of societal cancers as deadly as the virus. As others have pointed out, health insecurity kills, and poverty is poison.  We can and must make a society that views the soaring of a child's potential with more joy than the soaring of a rocket.

I stand ready to join religious, civic, labor and business leaders in coming together to launch a new effort to bring about recovery and reconciliation in our city.  We do not need a study of the causes and effects. Those answers can be found on the shelves of government offices and academic institutions across our burning nation. No, we need to take up the hard work of healing the deep wound that has afflicted our people since the first slave ships docked on this continent. And we need to start today.

A Prayer for Healing
Loving God, turn your ear to the cries of your sons and daughters who seek healing.
Ease our troubled hearts. Mend our broken spirits. Be ever present in our distress.

Merciful Lord, send your Healing Spirit to our brothers and sisters who have endured pain and abuse physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Comfort their weary spirits. Soothe their pain.

May our eyes be opened to see your image in these wounded members of Your people. Give us all courage to act and speak up on behalf of the most vulnerable.
Pour forth Your healing Spirit to renew our trust and hope in You, who are our refuge and our strength.
We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

June 7, 2020:  Most Holy Trinity Gospel Reflection
The Holy Trinity is an amazing mystery that we as mere humans will never really be able to wrap our minds around; three distinct individuals all in one. The great thing is we aren't supposed to comprehend the Holy Trinity! We are to live in the mystery and in awe of the ways God is accessible to us!

In today's gospel we start out by hearing one of the most quoted versus in the New Testament, "God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life", John 3:16. Earlier in the chapter we see the Pharisee Nicodemus seek out Jesus for counsel. Nicodemus goes to Jesus in the night. In scripture light & dark, day and night are often symbolic of one's relationship or understanding of God. Since Nicodemus seeks Jesus out at night we know he does not have a full grasp of who Jesus is and what his mission is. Nicodemus will also leave at night, indicating that even after the encounter he still doesn't fully understand what Jesus is about.

Jesus tells Nicodemus that he must be born from above if he is to have eternal life. Nicodemus understandably does not grasp what Jesus is saying and thinks Jesus is speaking of being born again as an adult. However Jesus was referring to how we must be born in the Spirit, baptism by the Spirit if you will, to receive your God given mission. Unless we allow the Spirit to reside within us and to guide us in what God desires for each of us to do, we cannot have eternal life.

The great part is that Jesus states he didn't come to our world to condemn us, no, Jesus came to offer us all eternal life! God is always offering us salvation, every day; we must only be open to it, accept it and live it out.

Archdiocese of Chicago's Online Grief Groups

Each online grief group consists of a small group of adults (18 years of age or older) who have lost a family member or a friend. In the absence of our usual in-person parish life, our online grief groups are places to share stories and feelings with others who have also experienced loss. Our online grief group facilitators are not counselors and do not give advice, but they will be present to listen and to guide each grief group in prayer and discussion. As Jesus comforted Martha and Mary after the death of their brother, Lazarus, a grief group is a place of comfort in our tradition. If you have experienced loss and are interested in joining us, please  sign up here .

Stewardship
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son . . ."  John 3:16

Is your love conditional? Is there a price others have to pay to receive your love? Are you generous with your time, money, and possessions? If you give someone something, do you expect something in return? Do you give your time freely or do you "fit it in" when it's convenient for you? Pray for a grateful and generous heart.
