June 7 Greetings

Dear Ones,

It’s Monday of the second week of June, but I am writing this Sunday as Gail Kenny is helping Kimberly, and Gail had a prior commitment on Monday…so here I am on Sunday afternoon, after the sleep of the righteous (the customary after-worship nap taken by most pastors)! I am still smiling from the wonderful weekend Tim and I shared getting to see Ben sing in Bizet’s “Don Procopio” with the Pacific Opera Project. When asked if it’s worth it to drive 415 miles each direction of see 90 minutes of your son doing what he loves…absolutely! The Broadway World review said of Ben: Ben Lowe was a commanding Don Procopio who dominated the stage visually and vocally.

The show was set in Heritage Square, in the Montecito Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, where eight historical buildings from around Los Angeles have been brought together as a living history and architecture museum. The set was built next to the Lincoln Avenue Methodist Church that was built in 1897. Here are some pictures from opening night.

Sunday we worshiped in the sanctuary of Emmanuel with all the pew chairs returned and no masks for the fully vaccinated! (If you could not be there, you can watch the replay of the 9:00 a.m. service livestream here.) There will be some folks who are most comfortable still wearing masks as they have loved ones who cannot be vaccinated yet, but it was lovely to see all those smiling faces! I knew all was right with the world when I saw Nancy Renner there in her second-row seat.

The Church in a Changing World Task Force has moved Emmanuel into stage five of our pandemic reopening plan: We continue to encourage masks and distancing for those who are not able or choose not to be vaccinated, including children. The new “normal” included the following: receiving communion using individual kits, everyone signing in at the Welcome table and the offering plate at the welcome table. I think that many would say that the highlight of the morning was the singing of the Lord’s Prayer at the traditional service. Please join us next week at 9:00 a.m. for the live-streamed traditional service or the 11:00 a.m. contemporary service as we continue to go bravely into a new way of being church!

We are in dire need of worship team members! Can you see yourself as a greeter, an usher, a liturgist or staffing the welcome table? It takes many hands to make our worship happen. If you have done one of these tasks in the past or are totally new at it (we’ll train you), please let Pr. Tricia or Mary in the office know, or contact Carol Northrup at [email protected]

On Sunday, we resumed collection of food items for the Prescott Valley Food Pantry at 8781 E. Spouse Dr. Rhonda Medina will be taking the items to the pantry on Wednesday or Thursday, so there is still some time to bring your donated items to the narthex. Most needed items include:

  • canned fruits
  • canned vegetables
  • tuna
  • canned chicken
  • pastas
  • mac & cheese
  • peanut butter
  • boxed cereal
  • rice

Cash donations are always appreciated as they can fill in with items such as fresh food, breads and meats.

Last chance to sign up! We are offering a Food Handler’s class at Emmanuel Wednesday, June 9 at 9:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. If you are someone who helps with the Interfaith Meal or would like to be part of the Fellowship Ministry that will be serving food during fellowship time in the future, you need to have a Food Handler’s card! The certification is good for 2 years. Please contact Mary in the church office to sign up for the class, we need at least 10 people!

Not a particularly good recording, but here is a scene from the Pacific Opera Project's show Don Procopio, where baby shower gifts are presented to the prospective groom…in hopes of scaring him away!

Here is the Detty Family singing Church (Take Me Back). It seems kind of appropriate for all of us looking at returning to church after a pandemic absence.

If you look carefully, you can see this small rose plant rising from the dried and cracked soil, a reassurance that with God, all things are possible, even when we were sure it was time to throw in the towel!

A Bible verse for today:

"Then we will never turn back from you; give us life and we will call on your name."

Psalm 80:14
