Calling Creatives and Graphic Designers!
Interested in helping Hillview with a creative project? The school administration and Site Council are looking for graphic design help over the summer to create a package of visual assets that bring to life the attributes of a Hillview student. If interested, contact Principal Willy Haug here .

Help out at HAWKAPALOOZA!
Friday, June 14, 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
At the Hillview last-day-of-school party, all the students come together to celebrate before summer begins. Hawkapalooza is organized and supervised by the teachers and ASB, but they need a lot of parents to help with line control and operating the carnival games. F or more details and to sign up, see here.

iPad Collection
Each grade level has a separate iPad collection date:
  • 7th-grade iPads will be collected in social studies classes on Wednesday, June 12
  • 6th grade iPads will be collected in science classes on Monday, June 10
Students should turn in the iPad in the case, with charging block, and charging cord. Fines will be assessed for damaged or lost items.

Last Day of School Bus Schedule
Friday, June 14, 11:45 a.m.
The last day of school is a minimum day; dismissal at 11:45 a.m. All morning bus routes will run as usual, including both of the SAMTrans routes and the MPCSD yellow bus route. Action Required - Parents of Current 6th-Grade Students
Whooping Cough (Pertussis) Tdap Vaccination and NEW LAW* for Varicella (Chickenpox) Vaccination

All incoming 7th-grade students for the 2019-20 school year are required by law to provide proof:
  • whooping cough booster, or Tdap shot administered on or after the student's 7th birthday (Td does not meet the requirement)
  • a second Varicella (Chickenpox) vaccination
*this new law is effective July 1, 2019 and is required for 7th-grade entry
In order for your student to pick up their class schedule at the Hillview Aloha check-in on August 20 and to avoid exclusion on the first day of school, bring an updated copy of your student's immunization record showing proof of Tdap administered on or after their 7th birthday and a second Varicella, to the school office, email a pdf to Nancy McMahon, Health Services Assistant, here or fax to 650-292-2200.

Do not mark or highlight this record. If there is a verified medical condition against vaccination, a parent/guardian is required to provide a written statement from a California licensed physician (MD or DO). The specific information required in this statement may be found in the FAQ section on the Shots for School website here.

The document must have your student's first and last name, date of birth, date Tdap and second Varicella was administered, and, if not on medical clinic letterhead, a stamp or physician's signature and date from the clinic. Acceptable proof of immunization includes the following:
  • Print-out or copy of immunization record from your student's clinic or physician's office
  • A stamped or signed copy of the yellow immunization record
  • A certification of Tdap booster notice from your student's clinic, physician's office, or pharmacy.
For more information about the law and immunizations for school, visit here.

Teacher and Staff Gift Fund
Friday, June 7, donations due
Hillview has a tradition of gift ing the staff as a community. Parents are encouraged to contribute to a centralized Teacher/Staff Gift Fund (organized by PTO volunteers) and all proceeds are used to buy gift cards for the entire Hillview team. The benefits of this approach are that teachers and staff choose something that they like with gift cards and we recognize all 80+ Hillview employees. The Gift Fund is used to recognize all academy teachers, elective teachers, specialists, custodians, and staff. Gift cards are delivered the last week of school on behalf of the entire Hillview community. There are several ways to participate:
  • Leave a check (made out to Liliana Perazich with "Hillview Gift Fund" in the notes) or cash in the Hillview Office in an envelope labeled: Liliana Perazich - Hillview Gift Fund
  • Mail a check to Liliana Perazich at 627 Woodland Avenue, Menlo Park, CA 94025
  • PayPal Liliana Perazich Hillview Gift Fund with "Hillview Gift Fund" in the notes,**we are using this as a last resort and prefer check or cash if possible!
Questions contact Liliana Perazich here.

Get On Board for Next Year!
We know...summer beckons, but the PTO has already begun gearing up for 2019 - 2020. Get involved for the first time or continue volunteering, we are excited to have you! Read through the Google form here and look at the PTO Volunteer page here for descriptions of the many different volunteer opportunities available. Checking a box indicates interest, not a commitment; the coordinators will contact you closer to an event to see if you are available.

We do have some time-sensitive needs for we are looking for help with the back-to-school activities in August, such as 6th-grade orientation, and to get rolling with Hot Lunch. Thank you in advance! Questions, email Emily Moberg Robinson here

Aloha Check-In Help Needed
Tuesday, August 20
7th- and 8th-grade students will receive their class schedules for the 2019-2020 school year at Aloha check-in. We are looking for parent volunteers to help with set-up/clean-up and to assist with handing out schedules to students. It's a fun way to start the year and meet a couple of Hillview parents! See SignUpGenius here for more information.

Be an Academy Lead Parent
Help Hillview by volunteering to be one of the Academy Lead Parents. It is the best way to interact with your children and see their teachers in action. The work is simple and takes overall less than two hours per trimester. We take multiple parents for each academy. If you are interested and have specific questions, contact Hillview Academy Parent Coordinator Hongran Stone here. Sign up with the Academy Lead Sign-Up Form here.

The LunchMaster offers convenience, flexibility, and peace of mind for parents. One entree, fresh fruit, fresh vegetable, snack, and choice of cold beverage delivered to your student''s school, set-up your account here.

Every year, MPCSD gathers community feedback. Input from this survey is used to help the Board and staff in planning and prioritizing what is most important to our stakeholders. This is different from the school site surveys that were completed a couple of months ago. Please take five minutes to complete our annual community survey, and feel free to share the link with friends and neighbors in our district who don't currently have children in our schools. We value feedback from all MPCSD community members. Thank you. Survey link here.

Hillview Service Team
5th Annual Hillview Relay for Life
On the night of May 31, more than 250 Hillview students participated in the Hillview Relay for Life, walking the track in glowing costumes, dancing to the DJ, honoring and remembering cancer warriors in their lives.  The students raised an amazing $90,000 (and counting!).

All funds benefit the American Cancer Society, the students matched last year's fundraising numbers. An achievement made all the more impressive with a third fewer participants this year.

This event was the culmination of six weeks of weekly meetings, fundraiser activities, cancer education and learning to work as a team toward a greater cause. Congratulations to all the students for their amazing efforts and for making an impact on the lives of others.

A big thank you to event co-chairs Jennie Lang and Stacy Goldman, teacher liaison Charea Batiste, and to the 60 plus parent volunteers who helped organize, prepare, bake, and chaperone the students on the big night.

If you did not get a chance to support the Hillview community Relay for Life, donations are still being accepted here,  (make sure to choose "I just want to support Relay for Life in General").

Contact the Hillview Service team here if interested in learning about Relay for Life volunteer opportunities for next year.

Your Foundation $$ in Action! Jeanie Ritchie Grants
Jeanie Ritchie Grants are funded by the MPAEF and enable teachers to pursue innovative teaching programs in their classroom, grade or school. Grants are awarded based on the three key criteria of the program: innovation, creativity and enrichment.

Spotlight on "Row, Ride, Run" Grant
Awarded to  Russ Peterson  here , Physical Literacy and Education teacher at Hillview.

What were your overall impressions of this grant in action? Did it achieve the goals outlined on the grant application?
"Bottom line is that cardiovascular fitness is important to everyone's overall health. This grant was to offer students alternatives to working on that personal goal. Often times we run the track or do warm-up exercises where it is clear who runs fast/slow, or who does XYZ better than their neighbor. These machines took away any negative performance stigma and students just got to blast through their exercise."

In your opinion, what is the best part about this grant?
"I saw students racing each other and laughing and smiling while accomplishing their workout. Win-win!"

Congratulations to all of this year's grant recipients and thank you for being amazing role models of innovation and hard work! For more information on the Jeanie Ritchie Teaching Innovation Grant program  here .
