June Artist Spotlight: Laura McIvor, Calgary, AB

Laura McIvor is a Calgary based jewellery artist that feels very fortunate to be able to create for a living. Her studio is a world filled with carefully harvested baubles, beads, music...and inspiration! And though most of Laura's designs are inspired by music, her latest collection entitled "Tidal Treasures" looks to the ocean as her muse. Perhaps in need of an Oceanside vacation, visions of deep blue water, ocean creatures and a sense of play prevailed. The result is a collection of wearable art - and a few whimsical exceptions - that reflects Laura's vision of the deep.
I work full time in my home studio and thoroughly enjoy the daily commute. My jewellery represents the culmination of my previous art forms. A painters' eye for colour, the creative spirit of music and the amazing power of silver, hammers, pliers and a torch. I enjoy the creative process. Many of my designs involve hammered textures. I love the way the hammered finish catches the light, much like the highlight stroke of a paintbrush. Semi-precious stones, crystals and pearls allow the introduction of colour. I look to my paint pots for inspiration in mixing interesting colour combinations. I strive to marry form and function to ensure a quality piece of wearable art. It is very important to ensure that each piece not only looks and feels wonderful, but is also practical to wear.
