A message from our president

Dear FRIENDS,

Let's celebrate each day by trying something new from the countless opportunities within the Seashore.

Consider a quiet walk through the dunes instead of a group hike. In place of chatter, it's crunch, crunch -the only sound you will hear, as your sneakers hit sand. If you have avoided organized activities, latch on to a ranger-led program.

You will learn at least one new fact and may enjoy sharing that discovery.  If you're a beach bunny, sign up for a tour of Penniman House or Atwood-Higgins. Are you a stranger to the Old Harbor Life-Saving Station?  Take advantage of its Open House schedule and soak up history, culture, and inspiration.

Click here to find a list of all Park activities.  Summer will flash by!  Check out the Friends online for the list of our summer programs. Get to at least one event for sure-fire entertainment. Free to the public thanks to our membership dues.

Have a wonderful summer.

News from the Seashore

Cape Cod National Seashore
 Lifeguard Programs

Lifeguards at Cape Cod National Seashore have been saving lives and keeping the beaches safe for thousands of visitors. In addition to the approximately 50 summer lifeguards employed each season, the Park also offers a Junior Lifeguard Program for approximately 18 boys and girls ages 13-17.

Accepted applicants receive instruction in CPR/AED, first aid, and life saving techniques for high surf conditions. The program kicks off on July 5th at Marconi Beach. All participants are required to complete a 1/3-mile open ocean swim followed by a 1/2- mile beach run.

CCNS Lifeguard Alumni Association was founded in 2012 on the 50th anniversary of the Lifeguards Program. Its mission is to raise funds to start a beach safety outreach program, support the Seashore's Junior Lifeguard Program, hold lifeguard-oriented competitions, and create a scholarship fund.

This year the Alumni Association will be present at the Cape Cod Lifesaving Competition. They will distribute a beach safety flyer and talk to visitors about ocean safety. They will also host The Cape Cod Lifeguard Challenge Wednesday evenings in July at 6:15 PM at Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet, and The Cape Cod Outer Beach Run on August 13 at Marconi Beach in Wellfleet.  All proceeds will benefit the lifeguard scholarship fund.

 Returns to the Park

After a very successful performance last summer to celebrate the National Park Service centennial, the Cape Cod Symphony will return for a free outdoor event at Salt Pond amphitheater on Friday, August 25.

The locally inspired repertoire will feature pieces associated with the Kennedy centenary, maritime history, artists and writers, the Wampanoag, and a reprise of "Sanctuary."

Park staff and area choral groups will also play a role in the performance.

The evening is  hosted by Cape Cod National Seashore, the Cape Symphony, and the Lower Cape Outreach Council, with major funding provided by Friends of the CCNS and Eastern National.

Mark your calendars -  this is an evening you won't want to miss!

Rain date is August 26

Salt Pond Amphitheater Ready
 for Inaugural Event

The new amphitheater at Salt Pond Visitor Center will host the Wampanoag Spring Cultural Festival on June 17. Come and celebrate the Wampanoag culture with members of the Aquinnah and Mashpee Wampanoag tribes.

From 10:00 am - 12:30 pm they will demonstrate refined traditional skills such as Native cuisine, coiled pottery, weaving and wampum, and children's games.

The Kingfishers Singers and Dancers will be on hand from 1:30 - 2:30 for an interactive performance featuring round dances, plus robin, rabbit, and other traditional Eastern Woodlands social dances.

If weather is inclement, contact SPVC for possible relocation.

Supporting Science

Through the Nickerson Fund, the Friends is proud to support important scientific research in the Park. This year we gave two Nickerson Fellowship awards.

Owen Nichols received $1500 to support a study of shellfish and horseshoe crab larval flow at the East Harbor tidal restoration site.

Faming Wang also received $1500 for field greenhouse gas data collection to support the Herring River Carbon Project and its feasibility study. We look forward to learning more about their research in the coming months.

Beach Clean-up Results

Thanks to everyone who participated in the annual Earth Day clean-up of Herring Cove Beach. Items collected have been carefully counted and cataloged to study the environmental impact of plastics and the origins of beach trash.

In total, volunteers picked up 2047 pieces of garbage.

Top ten items were:

Food Wrappers--341
Non-descript plastic--242
Plastic Wrapping--235
Rope--183
Caps/lids--165
Balloons/balloon strings--95
Styrofoam Pieces--81
Styrofoam cups/pieces-77
Straws/stirrers--71
Netting/pieces of netting--68

Items such as a Boston parking ticket, a wrist band from TD Garden, and a bag tag from a downtown Boston college help researchers pinpoint where much of our beach trash originates!
