Lifeguards at Cape Cod National Seashore have been saving lives and keeping the beaches safe for thousands of visitors. In addition to the approximately 50 summer lifeguards employed each season, the Park also offers a Junior Lifeguard Program for approximately 18 boys and girls ages 13-17.
Accepted applicants receive instruction in CPR/AED, first aid, and life saving techniques for high surf conditions. The program kicks off on July 5th at Marconi Beach. All participants are required to complete a 1/3-mile open ocean swim followed by a 1/2- mile beach run.
CCNS Lifeguard Alumni Association
was founded in 2012 on the 50th anniversary of the Lifeguards Program. Its mission is to raise funds to start a beach safety outreach program, support the Seashore's Junior Lifeguard Program, hold lifeguard-oriented competitions, and create a scholarship fund.
This year the Alumni Association will be present at the Cape Cod Lifesaving Competition. They will distribute a beach safety flyer and talk to visitors about ocean safety. They will also host The Cape Cod Lifeguard Challenge Wednesday evenings in July at 6:15 PM at Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet, and The Cape Cod Outer Beach Run on August 13 at Marconi Beach in Wellfleet. All proceeds will benefit the lifeguard scholarship fund.
Returns to the Park
After a very successful performance last summer to celebrate the National Park Service centennial, the Cape Cod Symphony will return for a free outdoor event at Salt Pond amphitheater on Friday, August 25.
The locally inspired repertoire will feature pieces associated with the Kennedy centenary, maritime history, artists and writers, the Wampanoag, and a reprise of "Sanctuary."
Park staff and area choral groups will also play a role in the performance.
The evening is
hosted by Cape Cod National Seashore, the Cape Symphony, and the Lower Cape Outreach Council, with major funding provided by Friends of the CCNS and Eastern National.

Salt Pond Amphitheater Ready
for Inaugural Event
The new amphitheater at Salt Pond Visitor Center will host the Wampanoag Spring Cultural Festival on June 17. Come and celebrate the Wampanoag culture with members of the Aquinnah and Mashpee Wampanoag tribes.
From 10:00 am - 12:30 pm they will demonstrate refined traditional skills such as Native cuisine, coiled pottery, weaving and wampum, and children's games.
The Kingfishers Singers and Dancers will be on hand from 1:30 - 2:30 for an interactive performance featuring round dances, plus robin, rabbit, and other traditional Eastern Woodlands social dances.
