Northwest Biosolids is Growing Research - Invitation to Submit Research Project Proposals
|
Northwest Biosolids has a funding opportunity to help expand research into all our member areas. Our members told us that biosolids beneficial use research is a priority, and that quantifying climate change benefits and quantifying economic benefits of biosolids are key areas of interest. We have committed $75,000 to our new research grant program. Northwest Biosolids is providing this funding opportunity to existing members and new members and their researcher partners that have interest in biosolids and related topics. The deadline for proposal submission is Friday, September 9, 2022.

Microplastics Yet Again
By Dr. Sally Brown, University of Washington
|
Forget catching your breath. You caught a bit of a reprieve last month with a focus on the importance of capturing and reusing fixed nitrogen. This month we are back into contaminants. PFAS seems to be really overwhelming the universe but if you look in the literature, the tide seems to have turned to microplastics. Not sure if that is a good or a bad thing.
As with just about all of the contaminants these days, the concern seems to really zero in on the biosolids pathway. At least that is how it often feels to practitioners. What I want to do this month is add some links to show that in reality, the concern extends beyond the cake. Microplastics have been in the news lately- even without the focus on wastewater.

Biosolids Scientist Updates
By Dr. Sally Brown, University of Washington
|
Al Page turned 95 this spring. It is a testament to the impact of his work that most people reading this will have no idea who he is. The W 4170 meeting is being held in Riverside, CA this year so that Al can come by and we can honor his work.
Al was the godfather of the EPA 503 regulations. A soil scientist from the University of California at Riverside, Al was part of the regulation development process at its’ onset.

Thank you, Steve Thompson!!!
|
The Northwest Biosolids (NWB) Board of Directors wishes a fond departure from the Board of a long-term Officer and Director to retirement. Steve Thompson, of Clean Water Services (CWS, Oregon) has retired (as of the end of May 2022) from his working position as Senior Operations Analyst in CWS’s Research and Innovation Department. Steve has worked for CWS for many years, including in their laboratory and the role of environmental compliance. At NWB, Steve has been a long-serving Board Secretary with responsibilities for managing the organization’s bylaws and articles of incorporation. What many don’t know is that Steve was one of the founding initiators in 1987 for NWB (known back then as Northwest Biosolids Management Association). A lot has changed over the years, and Steve has been a positive influence on keeping NWB at the forefront of research and promoting the values and benefits of safe biosolids practices and solutions. Steve has indicated he will start his new “job” of retirement in style with some long-delayed road trips around the greater northwest. We wish Steve and his wife an enjoyable and safe future. We hope he will find the time to re-join us at upcoming BioFest events and share his experiences.
Thank you for your years of service, expertise, dedication, and friendship! Good luck going forward. We will miss you!

Sharing the Second PFAS AA and Legislative Report
Washington Department of Ecology
|
What submitting this report means
In the first PFAS AA, which we published in February 2021, we identified safer alternatives to replace PFAS in wraps and liners, plates, food boats, and pizza boxes. For the second AA, we identified safer alternatives to replace PFAS in bags and sleeves, bowls, flat serviceware, open-top containers, and closed containers. Submitting this second report begins a two-year timeline that will restrict PFAS in these five types of food packaging beginning in May 2024.
Stay engaged with the AA process
Join us on Monday, June 6, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. PST to hear results from the second report. We do not require registration.
- Join the Zoom meeting
- Dial-in information
- Phone number: +1-253-215-8782
- Meeting ID: 819 7486 0543
- Passcode: PFAS-AA
Our team will provide a project update and answer your questions about the second PFAS AA. We would also like to ask for your feedback as we scope the third AA.
The third assessment will look for safer alternatives to PFAS in other types of food packaging where we see evidence of PFAS use, like popcorn bags. We encourage stakeholders and the public to continue engaging with our process. Your input is crucial.
