Project Phases:

Our project work moves through a process that's divided into four phases: Defining, Planning, Execution and Completion. For detailed definitions of each project phase, go here

PLANNING PHASE

Recreation Feasibility Study

A significant milestone was reached this month as the Board of Park Commissioners approved Wight & Company to lead the District's Comprehensive Recreation Feasibility Study.

The firm was chosen following a competitive selection process involving nine architectural and planning firms, public presentations by the two finalist teams, and a formal evaluation by the Board.

PLANNING PHASE

Centennial Cooling Tower Project

Centennial Recreation Complex Cooling Tower Replacement Project, a major capital investment designed to improve operational reliability and support the long-term future of Centennial Ice Arenas.

The project includes replacing and relocating the facility's cooling tower from the roof to a new ground-level location, constructing a sound barrier wall, completing utility upgrades, and preparing the facility for future structural and roof improvements. The cooling tower is a critical component of the refrigeration system that supports both ice rinks.

STATE GRANT - Staff continue to pursue outside funding opportunities to offset project costs and maximize taxpayer investment. The Centennial Cooling Tower Replacement Project received $250,000 in State of Illinois grant funding, supported by Representative Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz, helping reduce the local financial impact of this critical infrastructure improvement.

SUSTAINABILITY - The Park District continues to make meaningful progress toward its sustainability goals through an ongoing districtwide lighting conversion project. The transition to LED lighting, lead by staff, across District facilities and parks is nearly complete.

The conversion will improve energy efficiency, reduce maintenance costs, and enhance lighting quality throughout the park system while supporting the District's long-term environmental stewardship efforts.

JULY 3 & PACE BUSSING - As the District prepares for one of its largest annual events, staff have expanded their partnership with PACE to improve access and reduce traffic congestion during Fun & Fireworks on July 3.

This year, two dedicated shuttle routes will serve Gillson Park:

  • Route 1: Service from Loyola Academy beginning at 4:00 p.m., with an additional stop at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Lake Avenue.
  • Route 2: Service from the Wilmette Metra Station at 12th Street.

LOOKING AHEAD - As Wilmette’s Sounds of Summer continues, a new collaborative offering from the Village of Wilmette and Wilmette Park District, brings live music and continues to draw residents together week after week, all Summer long.
