Welcome, incoming 9th graders! All of our coaches were present this past Wednesday for a welcome session aimed at introducing Churchill Athletics to our soon-to-be 9th grade Bulldogs. Over 150 students came and visited with us in the gym.
|
|
Our Athletic Director, Mr. Smith, was on hand to answer questions and direct students and their parents to the sports they were curious about. The Booster Club was on hand, as well, selling swag and talking about all of the great events that we help sponsor. We are so excited to welcome our new Bulldogs next year!

3 - Girls Lacrosse Winning Season
|
|
Churchill girl’s lacrosse ended another outstanding season with a record of 10-3, losing a 12-11 heartbreaker to Whitman in the Sectional finals. For the year, this well-balanced team averaged 16 goals per game while giving up only 6 per game. The season was marked by a close loss to then-undefeated Sherwood and a huge win against a powerful Damascus squad.
Three seniors left their marks on the record books. University of Chicago-bound
Emily “E-Money” Feigen
ended her stellar career with over 400 saves, more than any player in Churchill history, girl or boy. University of Delaware commit
Lizzie Hsu
finished her outstanding career with 192 goals, #2 all-time for girl’s lax, and 236 points, #4 all-time. And
Emma Sumberg
, the team’s leading scorer as a junior and senior, finished as Churchill's all-time scoring leader with 262 points and all-time assist leader with 190. George Washington commit and junior
Leah Rubino
is not far behind, with 167 goals and 201 points in just three seasons.
At the team celebration, the coaches recognized the following players:

The season’s end was bittersweet as the players and parents bid farewell to Coach Frank, who is stepping down after a long career at the helm of Churchill’s lax program. No one did more than Coach Frank to put Churchill girl’s lacrosse on the map in Montgomery County. She built a consistent winner with dedication, passion, and an unwavering commitment to her players and the sport. She will be sorely missed. We also say a fond farewell to Coach Gina B, who is moving on as well. Best of luck to both of these fine coaches.

Off the field, the bulldogs worked to create a meaningful legacy as well. Partnering with a national organization called Lace Up with Lax, the boys lacrosse team collected new shoes at home games to help our local homeless community. After the season, the team presented 49 pairs of new shoes and 75 pairs of Bombas socks to the children, women and men who shelter at the National Center for Children and Families (NCCF) in Bethesda.

10 - Baseball Finishes Best Season in Years!
|
|
The 2019 Bulldogs Varsity Baseball team had one of their best overall records in many years, finishing with a record of 15-5!
The Bulldogs went 5-1 in the Division and tied with B-CC and Whitman for the regular season Championship on their way to having the most overall wins in recent memories.
And while the play-off run for the Bulldogs ended in the second round with a loss to B-CC, this season was a huge success for the program overall with many reasons to be proud!
|
|
The Bulldogs were led this season by seven seniors, including captains
Michael Janis, Ben Nardi and Simon Fettig
, as well as
Jake DePirri, Matt Rudolph, Jake Kaplan and Will Beller
. This senior class has seen the program improve from a record to 4-13 their freshman year, to 10-10, 12-8 and now 15 -5. With 41 wins they represent one of the winningest senior classes in Churchill history!
|
|
|
Five Bulldogs were named to the All-Division First and Second teams, including seniors
Nardi, Janis and Fettig
, as well as Juniors
Ethan Rindner
(also a team Captain) and
Jesse Lacefield
.
Additional post-season honors included
Nardi, Janis and Fettig
being picked to play in the Montgomery County Senior All-Star Game as well as
Janis
and
Nardi
being picked to play in the Mid Atlantic Baseball Classic All-Star Game.
The team also had numerous contributions from a large class of 10 juniors on the team, including
Eddie Hacopian, Steven Hadad, Ari Isaacson, Aaron Shields, Ben Gumer, Ryan Gans, James O’Donnell and Jason Olinger
. And Freshman
Erik Rindner
became a key part of the lineup during the 2nd half of the season.
The 2019 season also saw major improvements to Chuck Stevens Field, making Churchill’s baseball field one of the best in the area! Those improvements started with new windscreens and distance markers added to the outfield fences at the beginning of the season, along with a new visitors bullpen.
|
|
The biggest improvement to Chuck Stevens Field then took place later in the season as a brand new state of the art scoreboard was installed and dedicated in in honor of Andy Ehrlich, a former Churchill baseball player (Class of ‘91), with members of the Ehrlich family, friends and alumni. The dedication ceremony was a wonderful celebration of Churchill Baseball and the larger Churchill Community, with hundreds of people attending to show their support!
Congratulations to Head Coach Pat Skellchock, Assistant Coaches Kyle Skellchock and Jim Tapley, and the entire 2019 Bulldogs Varsity baseball team on one of the best overall seasons in many years!
