AAUW ELECTION RESULTS
MEMBERS HAVE SPOKEN
|
|
Many thanks to everyone who voted in AAUW’s 2021 National Election. It took a mere three days to reach the required quorum—a testament to our members’ passion and engagement.
Julia Brown and Malinda Gaul were re-elected as board chair and vice chair, respectively, and Elizabeth Haynes and Joseph Bertolino will retain their board seats.
AAUW’s public policy priorities were approved by 92% of voters. The board-recommended ballot initiative to remove the college-degree membership requirement did not receive the two-thirds vote required to enact a bylaws change. However, a remarkable 63% of you voted in favor of this change, indicating a momentum shift toward a more inclusive membership.
While we have many voices, all AAUW members share a commitment to advancing gender equity for women and girls through research, education and advocacy. More than ever, we must embrace our values and continue to strive towards diversity, equity and inclusion; it’s a journey that will never end.

Women encounter a pay gap at every stage of life, but nowhere is it more pronounced than during the retirement years. On all three components of the “three-legged stool” of retirement security — Social Security, pension and savings — women fall short. As a result, they have 70% of the income that men have during retirement.

Two Minute Activist and American Jobs Plan
|
|
Invest in Women in the Workforce
One in four women reported leaving jobs for lack of childcare during the pandemic. This past year has witnessed the lowest participation rate for women in the workforce in 33 years. The American Jobs Plan will invest heavily in education, housing and public health to address the country’s most pressing needs. Tell Congress to support the American Jobs Plan.

Heidi Scott
Longtime member Heidi Scott passed away in early May. Heidi was an active and loyal member who served as Interest Group Chair and more recently as our Website Manager. Pre-pandemic she led the Lunch Bunch group and throughout the pandemic continued to participate in interest groups via Zoom. As a former librarian and an avid reader, she was particularly valued for her contribution to the discussions in several book groups. To quote Sarah Pruden: “I am so sad to learn of Heidi’s death. She inspired me both with her love of and insights into literature as well as by her determination to live fully despite her physical limitations. I can still see her on Zoom with her ever-present cat. I will honor her with a donation to AAUW.”

Annual Branch Meeting Caps the Year
|
|
The May 15th Annual Meeting marked the end of our traditional branch year. Once a quorum was achieved, new board members for the coming year were elected in a brief business meeting. (See the next article). Outgoing president Dottie Burk then presented a slide show highlighting branch activities of the past year. She expressed her sincere thanks to the officers, committees, and interest group chairs who worked so hard to adapt successfully to the year of the pandemic and to accomplish so much. The slide show will be posted on the branch website soon. After the show, members met in breakout rooms to catch up and to share their summer plans. The grand finale was a virtual passing of the gavel to newly elected president Dianne Sheridan. Congratulations, Dianne!

AAUW Membership Renewal 2021/2022
|
|
Help Support AAUW at All Levels
Renew your membership now.
|
|
Membership renewals for the 2021-2022 have begun. AAUW National dues in 2021 will increase by $3 to $62. State dues remain the same at $20.
But Wait!
Our branch dues have been $20 for many years, but for just this year, and because our expenses were lower during the pandemic, your Board voted to decrease branch dues by $3 to $17.
Total = $99, the same as last year!
There was a payment reminder in May from Membership Chair Barbara Thomas.
Here are the ways to renew
You will receive an email from AAUW National in June that will enable you to click on the link to pay your dues online with a credit card. (Donations made here go to National).
You will also have the option to print out the form and mail it with a check to the branch treasurer. (Donations made with a check go to the Marin Branch.)
All 50 year members and members without email will receive a paper mailing for their dues renewal by June 1, 2020.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact:
Barbara Thomas, Membership Chair

Summer Zoom
|
|
It's probably too early to gather in person in a large group, but let’s touch base by Zoom for some fun. Maybe an opportunity to buy lunch again from Comforts or another local business? Some summer libation recipes? Maybe even a speaker on something new and different! Or, for the adventurous, perhaps some small backyard gatherings? Stay tuned for what develops!

This is the last newsletter that I will edit. I have enjoyed the position and through it have learned more about AAUW at all levels. Thank you to those of you opened and read it each month. The newsletter will be in good hands because Sherene Chen, the previous editor who taught me, will be taking over starting with the July issue. So, continue to keep up with the latest AAUW news and stay safe. Dianne Sheridan

Movie Group
Our movie for June is "Departures", an award winning Japanese movie. It won the 2009 Academy Award for best foreign film. It is available for free on TUBI and you will see a few commercials along with the movie but the whole show with commercials is 2 hours so not that many commercials. TUBI is a streaming service offered by Amazon where they broke some of their shows off from PRIME to add commercials to help pay for streaming them. For me, TUBI just shows up in the same area as Prime and Netflix do. Also it shows up if you just ask Alexa to find the movie "Departures". Check it out to see if you can find it. You will have to put in your date of birth to view their movies but that’s all you have to do. If a number for you can’t seem to locate it, we can switch to a different movie.
Let Mary Mossteller know if you can join them for the movie discussion June 22 at 7. She will send the Zoom link closer to the movie date.
